Game Thread Mar 07, 2022 06:30PM MT: Jazz at Mavericks

Added to Calendar: 03-07-22

Our starting lineup from the start of February onwards has had a net rating of -19.3 (meaning, they get outscored by 19.3 pts per 100 possessions).

2-man lineup data (sorted from best to worst):

Bojan/Royce: +9.8
Mitchell/Royce: +7.6
Mitchell/Bojan: +6.4
Gobert/Mitchell: -9.2
Gobert/Royce: -9.6
Gobert/Bojan: -9.8
Conley/Royce: -12.7
Conley/Bojan: -12.8
Conley/Gobert: -14.8
Conley/Mitchell: -17.0

3-man lineup data (also sorted from best to worst):

Bojan/Royce/Mitchell: +7.2
Bojan/Gobert/Royce: -8.0
Royce/Gobert/Mitchell: -9.1
Bojan/Gobert/Mitchell: -9.8
Bojan/Conley/Royce: -11.0
Royce/Conley/Mitchell: -16.0
Bojan/Conley/Mitchell: -16.8
Mitchell/Conley/Gobert: -20.1
Royce/Conley/Gobert: -20.3
Bojan/Conley/Gobert: -21.2

It's hard to separate Conley from Gobert because they play most of their minutes together, but the obvious interpretation is that Conley and Gobert, in any lineup, have been BAD. And what makes it particularly damning is that Quin plays these two together for fairly significant minutes against opposing teams' bench units. This same duo used to absolutely destroy teams last year - led the NBA in +/-, now they're getting destroyed themselves.

Gay and Conley have sucked for the past two months. They look too old.

We’ve ****ed up too many times in the draft. Should’ve drafted bane. Should’ve drafted herb Jones. You can’t **** up like that and not score anything in free agency and not have it take a toll.

So sick and tired of seeing the jazz get out worked. Been happening since after the Allstar break. And Quin is doing a poor piss job of coaching some urgency during the middle of a game. One thing I loved about Sloan was if the regulars were playing uninspired ball he’d pull the entire 5 out and put in the bench warmers, which would usually bring life to the team and serve to give the regulars a swift kick to the ego’s, and this teams bench warmers has 10 times the talent Sloan ever had.
We’re an older team. Conley, bogey, gay, etc aren’t spring chickens. Want energy and hustle? Gotta draft that and actually play it. We haven’t drafted that. And even if we had, would Quin play it? If we had drafted bane two years ago and Herb last year, would they even be playing right now?

Remember a couple years ago when the Jazz were considering taking Conley out of the starting lineup and bringing him off the bench?

last year we also had Joe who was great playing alongside rudy. he maybe slow but he was big enough to get the job done either lob to rudy, lefty layup or shoot a 3. he almost won 6MOY. now joe is gone nobody stepped up to fill that role. JC was also playing lights out, this year hes inconsistent. Conley otoh is clearly struggling vs long defenders. him and rudy is just too predictable.

Thats when Joe was in his prime and the Mitchell/Ingles/Bogey/Royce/Rudy lineup was absolutely dominating opponents. If I remember correctly that lineup had the best net rating in the NBA during the 19/20 season. Without Joe, there are no good options to replace Conley in the starting lineup.

Almost expected this performance. Wish they could have rested a bit more, but they just had to let the Thunder back in the game yesterday.

They aren’t 50. The effort isn’t an age thing, they also played stupid often doubling the ball handler off of pick and roll which got the mavs easy layups and wide open threes. It’s the veteran teams that win titles, idiot.
