The Mike Conley trade was the biggest failure in Jazz history

It was the right time to make an all in move. This past three year window was a better chance at winning the title than we will likely have in decades. We just picked the wrong guy, and on top of that, we didn't do a good job of negotiating.

One thing that's forgotten in this whole thing is that MEM had already drafted Ja. Perhaps the Grizzlies had multiple buyers, but it's crazy how they were still able to get premium value for a guy who had major injury concerns and a replacement already in place. They also did it in the worst way possible by taking him into cap space and limiting options for further roster building. If they wanted Conley so bad (they should have not paired Don with a tiny PG), they should have at least done it at the trade deadline before. Instead we got one more year of depressed Rubio because he knew they were going to trade him.

It's honestly not too different from the Jazz now. The Jazz had obvious flaws with that Rubio roster, and instead of addressing them, they sat on their hands until the roster was completely done. This FO is much more comfortable sitting around and hoping for the best than address obvious flaws on the roster.

Why are we talking about Exum?

In addition to discussing the worst trade of all time, are we discussing the worst draft pick of all time?

I don't know that Exum counts as the worst pick, The Jazz have had so many. Remember the center they drafted who was arrested for banging on garbage cans and threatening people? He wound up in a mental hospital and didn't even make it through the first half of his rookie season.

lmao relax. I would hardly call it mortgaging the future.

IT didnt work out. The Jazz hit the age regression curve earlier than we all expected. Ingles regressing completely then blowing out his knee was the final straw.

It sucks but it's over.
This lineup could’ve been interesting
Gobert
Bogey
O’Neale
Allen
Mitchell

Could’ve

Yep. I've said this before that this franchise is all about butts in the seats. Do just enough to win just enough to keep the fans engaged, but don't lose money in the process. Extreme moneyball focused on financial viability and fungibility of assets (players). Their focus hasn't been on winning a ring since Larry died, and even then I don't think they were ever all-in on the ring. They want the comfort of winning seasons, some playoff games and absolute minimal risk. Even going after Conley was a low risk, moderate reward move. Going after a CP3 or even a Brogdon would have been higher risk (from their perspective) and higher possible reward. But that doesn't fit their culture. Slow and steady keeps butts in the seats. That's the mantra.

This off-season will be very telling if Ryan is really bringing a new attitude and new approach, or if he will just be content putting black and yellow stickers on his new toy, and doesn't really care about winning it all

The Conley trade also took us out of the conversation for Jrue and CP3 completely when both these guys became available just one year later

  • Luther was the 18th pick
  • played 15 games,
  • ended up costing the Jazz 150k per year, for a total of 3.8M spread over 25 years.

  • Dante was the 5th overall pick,
  • Ranks as 51st (out of 60) in his draft class (VORP)
  • Had 3 (!) seasons with the Jazz where he played LESS than 15 games
  • costed the Jazz an average of 5.4M per year, and a total of $27M while with Utah
  • was taken before Jokic, Capela, Powell, Kyle Anderson, Nurkic, Dinwiddie, Randle, Grant, Joe Harris, Smart, Bogdan, McDermott, Jabari, LaVine, Gary Harris, Jordan Clarkson

At least we ripped the bandaid off with Luther. Dante was like an abscess that just wouldn't get better and took 5 years to get rid of.

Mitchell refuses to play the point… he must because there is no logical reasons why he hasn’t played it significantly up to this point.

I don't think he refuses to play the point, the coaches and front office likely didn't think he was ready to play the position full time. I think that changes next season...I think Conley will be moved and Donovan will be the starting point guard going forward.

****ing dumb if that’s the case. It would be another case of the Jazz FO doing the right thing 2 years too late.
I do t see how there is any way he didn’t ok the Conley trade. Why would you take the ball away from your best offensive player. Sure they needed someone who’s a better distributer, but what they needed was for Mitchell to learn how to be a better distributer.

I'm sure I wasn't unique in thinking this, but before we signed Conley, I thought the guy we should be pairing with Mitchell was a bigger guard who could play the 1 or the 2. Start Mitchell at point, but have somebody beside him who could help with playmaking/ballhandling duties. If they can also shoot and defend, all the better.

At the time, Brogdon seemed closest to fitting the bill.

I was against the trade for Conley due to size and age. He also wasnt that great of a shooter back then along with other things. But after struggling for half a season he hit his stride and played pretty damn good up until February this year. I dont know what happened, but our whole team fell apart since then. The thing that really sucks was his health in the playoffs. CP3 has been really good the last couple years in the playoffs but his history of health and choking, combined with his contract seemed terrible a few years ago. Many thought he was untradeable the season we traded for Conley. CP3 was coming off his worst year, was 2 years older, and a huge contract. Good for him for turning things around, still dont like him personally, and happy we didnt get him. We should have gone after other people instead of Conley though. It was at least nice to see the Jazz swing for the fences once in the history of the team in an off season.

We had our best shot last year, we had the team and ability to go somewhere. We simply chocked against Clippers and had serious health issues. Even if we had made a different trades we did what we needed to have a shot, we just came up short.

I hope we can retool quickly and stay in the playoffs. I have 0 interest in tanking. That didnt pan out at all for the Jazz before and wont. We cant afford years of bad teams.

We need to move Conley and we need to move Gobert or Mitchell. If there is real commitment from Mitchell to stay then I think you trade Gobert. If its not a firm commitment then give Gobert some help on defense and try to build around him.

No point of keeping DM here if we keep Conley. They just don't work together. DM's production and efficiency drops whenever Conley steps onto the court this season

Utah should try to trade Conley and Rudy Gay to Minnesota for D’Angelo Russell. Russell only has a year left on his deal and has good size at 6’4”

Another option if we cant trade Mike to is put Don at SF. O Neal is garbage and Conley has a better pass quality than Don. Then we need to give more chance to Forrest.
