Depth Chart Predictions

Is that so far-fetched? I mean, has Miles set himself apart from the pack after all these years? Because if you're assuming that it's Hayward or Miles who's starting at the 3, you're also assuming Hayward or Burks (or Bell) is starting at the 2. Is is so unreasonable to think that our best, hardest working player, who's proved to us time and time again how he can develop his game has done so just a bit more once again, after playing some at the 3 last year, and has cracked the starting rotation ahead of players like Miles, Hayward, Burks and Bell?

I'm pretty skeptical of Sap's ability to play the 3. If he could, it would be fantastic. But if he's going to make it there, I very much doubt it will come from Ty starting him at a position he's barely ever played. It would come from graduated steps. First, Sap gets spot minutes in matchups. Second, injuries/struggles push Ty into starting Sap.

Sap isn't a guy you convert to 3 right off the bat. Which is why I find it insane to predict he'll be the starting 3 on opening night. We'd be a ton better if he could actually play the position regularly. Personally, I don't think he can.

This is the lineup I hope we eventually end up with.

Harris/Watson/Burks
Burks/Miles/Bell
Hayward/Howard/Evans
Favors/Milsap
Jefferson/Okur/Kanter

I think this is realistically what it will look like:

1 Harris/Watson/Tinsely
2 Hayward/Burks/Bell
3 Miles/Millsap/Howard/Evans
4 Favors/Millsap/Kanter/Evans
5 Jefferson/Okur/Kanter
DNP = Tinsley, Evans

Miles plays more at the SF than the SG, and he doesn't need to play at the SG due to Burks and Hayward's improvement.
Burks can also get a few minutes at PG ahead of Watson.

If the Jazz have their veteran bias:

1 Harris, Watson, Tinsley
2 Hayward, Bell, Burks (Hayward was starting over Bell at the end of last season, but I could see the vet getting the nod every once in a while.)
3 Miles, Howard, Millsap, Evans
4 Millsap, Favors, Kanter, Evans (I just can't see Favors being pushed to the bench for long.)
5 Jefferson, Okur, Kanter
DNP = Tinsley, Evans

Miles and Jefferson are going to be in trade rumors, since Kanter can start at C, and Howard or Hayward can start at SF.

Harris/Watson/Burks
Burks/Miles/Bell
Hayward/Howard/Evans
Favors/Milsap
Jefferson/Okur/Kanter

Tweaked a tiny bit. Jefferson and Favors are sort of interchangeable depending on the 4's they're playing.

Harris/Watson/Burks
Burks/Miles/Bell
Hayward/Howard/Evans
Jefferson/Milsap
Favors/Kanter/Okur

Miles and Jefferson are going to be in trade rumors, IF Kanter can start at C, and Howard or Hayward can start at SF.

I think Ty will shake up the lineup every few games due to the compressed schedule. Hopefully he also looks at matchups instead of just set rotations. I also think the schedule is going to lend itself to different guys getting DNP's. Harris always misses a few games every year; Okur may sit out once or twice a week, etc. And, I think Kanter will struggle as a sub; there's no way he's even remotely ready to be a starter. But, if he's a fast learner, then Jefferson or Millsap could be dealt at the deadline. I also think the Jazz will be dealing Tinsley, Howard and perhaps CJ if they're out of the playoff picture.

I think Kanter with half a clue might be better than Okur with a complete clue, at least in terms of defensive rotations and offensive rebounding. That said, if Okur is shooting well, it will open things up a bit for our post players. It will be interesting to see what Okur and Kanter both look like in pre-season.

There are a lot of possibilities with this team. If Millsap can play like a big SF, it adds another dimension. Josh Howard has a pretty complete game also if he's in good shape. He's smoother than Miles. Burks also sounds multi-dimensional. So is Hayward. It's going to be exciting to watch.

I'd be surprised if Jazz trade anyone this season.
They now have talent, depth, youth, experience at every position.
They have a manageable payroll, contracts, and considerable cap room next year.
Jazz have gone from turmoil last year to a very promising future.
No need to shake things up till next season.
Anything is possible but Jazz front office has done exceptional job.

Good post. Okur, Miles, Howard and Tinsley all expire at the end of the year, so there's that added flexibility.

You predict Sap will start at the 3?

I actually agree with SalmonHobo on this. The starting lineup of Harris, Hayward, Millsap, Favors, and Jefferson gives us the best chance of winning games. If Paul has a realistic future with our team, it is going to be at Small Forward. Especially since teams like the Lakers, who still have Gasol and Bynum starting at power forward and center, are moving towards having players at LEAST 6'10" or taller at their PF and C positions. Paul Millsap simply cannot match up against players of that size on defense. He gets eaten alive. However, the thing that I like the best with the starting combo of Favors and Jefferson at PF and C is that they match up better against other team's power forward and center combinations (like Gasol and Bynum). The best small forwards in the league (Lebron, Carmelo, Rudy Gay, etc.) all now have much stronger bodies than they have in the past. Lebron is virtually the EXACT SAME SIZE as Paul Millsap (6'7"/6'8" and around 250 pounds, which is my ideal size for an NBA small forward). Paul is also exceptionally athletic for his size and weight. He also possesses good ball-handling ability, a great mid-range game, AND three-point range on his jumper (Miami game from last year as evidence). I think that Paul SHOULD be our small forward of the present and future if his future is with the Jazz.

With this compressed season, I'm thinkin' keep 15, with 3-deep across the board.
PG Harris, Watson, Tinsley
SG Bell, Miles, Burks
SF Hayward, Howard, Gilder
PF Millsap, Favors, Evans
C Jefferson, Okur, Kanter

I'm interested to see what type of reaction people will have around here when Corbin finishes with an all veteran lineup.

Harris
Howard
Jefferson
Okur
Millsap
