My guess here is that despite the league-wide interest, Ainge was only getting offers of second rounders for Vanderbilt. In Ainge calculus, Conley's stock will never be as high again, and he prefers the first-rounder that has a chance of being very high to a cornucopia of second rounders.

It's actually 4 years out but I'm going to assume they could use a few of those unprotected picks to acquire a star in the next 1-2 years.
Thanks in part to Ainge the going rate is 3 unprotected FRP's for a star player so it's not a bad idea to stock up when one comes available.
