While the board handles infrastructure and maintenance, DeSantis boasted that it could use its leverage to force Disney to stop “trying to inject woke ideology” on children.

“When you lose your way, you’ve got to have people that are going to tell you the truth,” DeSantis proclaimed. “So we hope they can get back on. But I think all of these board members very much would like to see the type of entertainment that all families can appreciate.”

I'm mixed on this one. While I totally oppose the motivation for DeSantis taking these actions, I also oppose the type of crony capitalism that set up the Reedy Creek carve out to begin with. Anyone should be able to criticize the government as much as they like without fear of repercussion from said government, and should be allowed to make any content they want so long as it is not prohibited by law. At the same time, Disney should have the same set of rules for its park as all other parks in Florida. If Sea World has to do X, Y, & Z then Disney should have to do X, Y, & Z. The marketplace should be an even field. Let the best product win.

I like the end result but listening to DeSantis' populist motivations and stated possible uses for government power to circumvent first amendment protections is cringe bordering on unnerving.

DeSantis is a guy who won elected office in a single state and can be voted out at any time. Disney took in $82.7 B-b-b-billion dollars last year and has an army of lawyers. Their platform for influencing the masses includes Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, Hulu, ESPN, and ABC among dozens of other outlets. Only a complete idiot would see a Disney versus DeSantis match-up and think DeSantis is punching down. DeSantis is just a guy. He's not a god. No politicians should be deified.

While I agree Disney has arguably WAY too much influence on media in general, that is the nature of the deregulated marketplace all the pure capatalists want. The natural final evolution of unfettered capitalism is a few monopolies controlling everything, and we are seeing thawt come to fruition, so shouldn't all capitalists be over-joyed? Seems DeSantis is trying to actually, in a weird mis-guided way, enact "regulations" of sorts on a company. That is very anti-capitalist of him, isn't it? I mean, he has an agenda that transcends the economics of course. If Disney were propagating white supremacy by bet is he would never have said a word. So besides his obvious partisan attempt to throttle free speech, he is doing so by going after a sovereign corporation and trying to dictate what they are allowed to produce. So are you in favor of free market economics or not? Are we ok with DeSantis attempting to dictate what products a given company can and cannot produce, or are we going to allow the market to determine which products are produced and sold?

You know there are regulatory bodies that address a company's overall influence on the economy, otherwise known as anti-trust violations, why isn't he helping to strengthen those regulations so one company doesn't have such a far-reaching influence over a single market segment? I guess that would hurt the companies he agrees with in equal measure, so we can't have that. It has to be targeted to take out the companies he disagrees with.

What a great and fully non-dysfunctional government, economy, and society we have, amirite?

It will be hard to find any sources telling you I'm right, and yet Disney is going to lose their Florida case. All of those last minute deals with Disney signed by the outgoing RCID board will all be invalidated, and once that happens the Federal case will also collapse because the Federal case is predicated almost entirely on Florida violating those same contracts.

The opinion shaping on this issue should be a lesson in what corporate entities like Disney are able to control but no one will learn a thing. It'll be claims of biased judges and governmental corruption to paint Disney as the victim. People will believe what they read, and nearly all of it will pushed into the media space by Disney's public relations. That said, at least this is going to cost Disney a boatload. Beyond all the cost for the PR, Disney is also paying for both sides of the legal fight. They have to pay for their own lawyers, and the taxpayers of the district have to pay for the government's lawyers, but 87% of the district's tax income comes from Disney.

If the natural and inevitable result of capitalism over time is always corporatism, why delineate? @your second paragraph, I'd argue that Disney and capitalism in general corrupt the government, not the other way around. The symptoms of the problem are sometimes diagnosed by the republican side (Trump in particular, thus his early popularity) but the root cause and correct solutions are never arrived at, deliberately. Democrats largely deny that a problem with neo-liberalism (our current organization of society) exists at all.

@LogGrad98 your post was from March but I wanted to comment on it. Ron Desantis has no actual principles, he's just reacting to stimuli. In Ronda's mind, Disney is "woke" and thus must be combated against. What Disney is really doing is trying to sell a product to the most amount of people. They're just participating in capitalism to the best of their ability. They'll use resources to control and use local and national government to gain tax advantages, subsidies, and whatever they need to improve their profit margin. Lobbying the government has great ROI, so why wouldn't a company do so?

Ron Desantis, hears the wrong thing and hates it. He doesn't give a **** about free speech, capitalism or anti-capitalism. There are no principles. He's a reactionary.
