2023 NBA Draft Megathread

I would offer the 2027 Laker Pick, the Jazz 2023 9th pick and the 2023 28th pick for Orlando's 6th and 11th pick.

Jazz would have 6th, 11th and 16th pick of the draft.

Ausur/Cam, Hendricks/Dick/Wallace, Bilal/Brice would be my targets

Watching Mets (Wemby and Bilal) vs Limoges....mostly watching for Bilal this game.

1Q
- He is matched up with a guy (Nicolas Lang second leading scorer) listed at 6'5 or 6'6 depending on the site....Bilal is clearly a couple inches taller.
- First play defensively is against a Spain PnR where he is guarding the low guy. He and his teammate do not communicate and blow the switch, but decent closeout speed to contest. I think his teammate should have switched but Bilal has to tell call it out to him
- Decent job getting around screens on defense...runs into the screen a little too much though
- Crashes the offensive boards for an easy putback
- Gets switched on the big man which puts him in help position and he rotates correctly forcing a shot clock violation
- Gets the long defensive rebound and pushes....slick eurostep for the finish through defenders. Wow....
- Other team tries to post up against him, falls over and loses the ball
- Entry pass into Wemby, instant double....Bilal cuts, Wemby great pass, Bilal is fouled but he should have been more assertive and he knows it. (2/2) from the line.
- These French league guards have no chance when Wemby and Bilal trap in PnR defense. Too much length.
- Another post up versus Bilal. Reach in foul knocks the ball away, it was a clean poke on replay.
- Bilal-Wemby PnR is switched by the defense. Bilal immediately throws a pass quickly but sketchy pass and it's a turnover. On replay it was a foul on the defense that knocked it out of Wemby's hands.
- Bilal's man comes off a pindown....better job avoiding contact on the screen and good contest.
- WTF Wemby turn around fade jumper.
- Other team runs Spain PnR out of timeout, this time Bilal reads it perfectly (Wemby good job of sniffing it out)
- Couple of open-ish touches for Bilal on the perimeter against zone defense, not even thinking about shooting and the defense doesn't think he will either.
- Next possession Wemby gets doubled in semi transition leaving Bilal wide open in the corner....decides to drive, and1 on a block charge call. Tough finish goes in.
- Another Spain PnR, Bilal and Wemby sniff it out againt. Bilal switches onto PnR ball handler who almost gets blocked and misses badly

Bilal plays really hard on defense, he is focused and engaged. Active on the glass and dangerous in transition/cutting. Otherwise doesn't do much on offense. When he has the ball he looks to move the ball when he has it and cut to the basket if he doesn't. Not looking to create much on his own. But he looks comfortable in the flow of the game.

2Q
- The French coach is still doing his weird *** long stints....oddd
- High PnR defense. Defends shot from behind well Joe Ingles style.
- Whenever he gets a defensive rebound he pushes and it looks like something might happen but it doesn't. Very conservative. I'm dying for him to be more aggressive instead of pulling it back out.
- Excellent extra pass to open man in Jazz blender situation
- Great defensive possession by Bilal, gets around screens well, switches perfectly, deflects the pass, multiple contests to force a miss....though it could be said he overplayed a bit and fell for a pump fake. Did like 4-5 things well on one defensive play though.

Did not play a ton of minutes this quarter

3Q
- First play defends well against pindown action
- Handles the ball for a decent amount of an offensive possession, gets a switch, no interest in attacking though. Looks for the pass to the big every time.
- Foul during broken play. Got beat by a fake. 3rd foul puts Bilal on the bench.
- Mets lose an 8 point lead, they have lost control of the game.
- Good job getting around the screen an contesting against off ball 3.
- Catch and shoot 3, miss. Slowish release.
- Late clock isolation defense. Decent defense, but opposing player makes the shot in his face. With better awareness of the clock situation he probably would have smothered him more.
- Pressured with the ball in triple threat, waiting for the play to develop but ends up losing it. Not good, when a guy is that aggressive he needs to break the play and drive.
- Another late clock iso defensive situation. This time against a small guy. Decent step back move, but Bilal is too long and contests well. Great defense.

Good defense this quarter, but a whole lot of nothing on offense except for that bad turnover.

4Q
- First offensive play ends up in Bilal-Wemby PnR....defended well by the defense and Bilal coughs the ball up on a drive. Needed more patience for the roll man to become an option.
- Palms the ball casually, Kawhi esque!
- Gets a tough offensive rebound and putback, might have been an and1
- Gets defensive rebound and pushes, this time tries to go 1v4 and loses the ball. Maybe this is why he is so conservative lol.
- Passes up an open 3 an favors the extra pass
- Bilal and Wemby and 2v2 defense dead ball situation in the clutch. Offense gets an open 3 on the inbound pass....looks like Wemby's fault
- Crucial defensive position has Bilal on the short guy again. Stuffs the first drive attempt. Second drive attempt hits Bilal with an even filthier step back, but doesn't make the shot after Bilal recovers for a contest. Bilal helps his team in a loose ball later in the play.
- Down by two short guy gets switch with Wemby. Another filthy step back, and then a moon ball go ahead 3 pointer for the win. GG!

Overall thoughts:
- First half was much better than the second half. Made more things happen on both ends.
- Defense and rebounding was good all game. He's very engaged and active. The other team did not get much whenever he was in the action. I think he can defend in the NBA day one.
- Good open court with speed, combined with his rebounding ability makes him a dangerous grab an go threat
- Some great finishing around the basket
- Some bad turnovers
- Prefers to cut when left open on the perimeter. Good that he's active, but you would like him to just be able to space out and be more confident in his shot
- Offensively is very constrained to a role on this team. Reminiscent of Exum....but instead of some decent drives every now and again you get a nice cut, offensive rebound, or transition play.

26 Minutes: 10/10/2 on 4/5 shooting . 3 turnovers. +12.

Can't wait to read through this when I get a few hours of free time.

I think Bilal’s most likely outcome is something similar to McDaniels/Herb Jones. A defensive menace with just enough offensive game to keep on the court. His defensive talent and toolset is elite, and I have no questions about his effort level/IQ after watching him closely on each possession. He does everything you want from a wind defensively. Guards wings, point of attack, switches into bugs, rebounds, defensive playmaker….he’s got the whole package.

On the low end, I guess you’d say he’d be a Craig/Okogie/Stanley/Justise type wing who is still very good defensively, but barely hanging onto a roster/rotations spot due to the offense. On the higher end he can be a Jalen Brown/Mikal/Mini Giannis if it all materializes. Overall I think he has a safe floor because his defensive ability is so solid. But he also has tremendous upside with his athleticism and coordination in both ends.

His offense is highly variable. On one hand, you could say that his limited offensive game is due to coaching/role. He’s very young and he’s playing in a competitive grown man league. At the youth levels he’s dominated as a number one option type guy. If he would just get the chance he would dominate right!?! On the other hand, you could say his role is so small simply because he’s too raw and not good enough to handle more.

Ultimately I think he does enough to be a starter level player. His ball handling is good, passing good enough, and finishing looks amazing. Also has a knack for making something out of nothing with his cuts and in the glass. But his hesitation to shoot is a red flag and if something will limit him it will be his shot. Despite his age/inexperience and “raw” label I think he has a good bball IQ. You can tell he’s played PG before.

I would offer the 2027 Laker Pick, the Jazz 2023 9th pick and the 2023 28th pick for Orlando's 6th and 11th pick.

Jazz would have 6th, 11th and 16th pick of the draft.

Yeah why not? You can almost build a complete team from just 1 draft.

One stop shop.

He's scared to shoot from distance......bummer..... :(
