What's new

Non-Salty Utah Utes 2012 Discussion

I think one thing is clear at this point: ARod is NOT Whit's first choice. If he was, that decision would have been made already. Those who thought that this was ARod's job to lose were wrong.....
Well of course he's not the FIRST choice. I mean, if Bill Belichick decided he wants to be Utah's new OC for some reason, the job would obviously be his.

My point is if Utah can get a big name, they should jump on it. And if Utah can't get a big name, ARod is the obvious choice.

The job is Arod's to lose, unless some big name decides to come to Utah. That's how I see it.

Here's what Whitt said about it:

"I always look inside first. You promote from within when you can," Whittingham said. "It's not always the right fit and it's not always the right circumstances, but I like to cultivate and develop coaches within the program and bring them up through our system and do that whenever possible."

With ARod having been the OC for a year already, he has to be the guy unless someone really good falls into Utah's lap.

I guess it boils down to semantics. When somebody says that this is ARod's job to lose, I take that to mean that he is the leading candidate for the job, which I don't believe he is. IMO Whit's quote says it all. He tries to promote from within as much as possible. The fact that ARod has already been demoted once, and that Whit is still looking at other applicants tells me that he would like to go in another direction if possible.

I think it is ARod's job to lose. Unless something crazy happens (like some unexpected big name saying they want the job) then ARod will probably be the new OC.

Whitt is obviously keeping his options open. That doesn't mean he doesn't want ARod, it just means if someone unexpectedly becomes available (who knew Boise State's OC was going to be available?) he wants to be able to move quickly. He already has ARod on staff, and probably already acting in this fashion, so might as well keep the options open.

If ARod got offered a job by some other school, then you'd probably see Whitt make an announcement. And if that had happened a month ago, it still wouldn't have meant ARod was the absolute first choice.

I would say right now ARod is definitely the leading candidate. I haven't even heard any strong rumors about anyone else. I've heard names tossed around here and there, but nothing too solid.

Not saying the leading candidate always gets the job. A bigger name may very well pop up. Who knows what NFL coaches will be looking for jobs. But right now ARod has to be considered the leading candidate.

SL Trib reported that Whitt has received over 70 applications for OC. He should take his time, see if he can find a diamond in the rough. An Urban to come in and blow this place up offensively.

This is a really good post. You've included a few "if's", threw in a few opinions in which you are assuming an awful lot, and left yourself a pretty good out regardless of who Whit ends up hiring. Well done.

I'll just continue to keep it short and simple: The OC position at Utah has been vacant for nearly a month and I believe the fact that ARod has yet to be promoted is a very telling sign.

What is so telling about ARod not getting promoted yet?

I can't think of any reason for Whitt to commit on ARod so soon.

Again, I agree that he isn't the first choice. I just don't think leading candidate and first choice are the same thing, and you apparently do.

The season is over. ARod is probably doing the exact same tasks right now that he would be doing if he was the OC. No need to promote him and miss out if someone better comes along.

That doesn't mean Whitt is actively recruiting another candidate. It just means Whitt is wisely keeping his options open.

While you say that ARod not being named the OC must mean he is not the leading candidate, I say that with all of the coaching changes that have taken place in college and the NFL, if Whitt was in a rush to hire someone, he would have done it by now.

Whitt is letting the process play out. He has his guy on his staff right now. If someone better comes along, he'll pick him up. But if nobody better comes along, ARod is the leading candidate for the job (and wouldn't be a bad hire).

The fact that there are two active Ute threads of multiple pages makes me want to vomit.

My hell, you guys ruined the last thread, get out of here. Go start a irrelevant TDS thread or something.

p.s. It's great knowing Alabama is still our bitch.

Alabama was LSU's bitch already this year. Still don't understand how you can have them playing again in the National Championship game. I thought the reason there's no playoff in D-I is BUT DUDE EVERY WEEK IS A PLAYOFF FOR REAL IM SORRY OKAY.

Lol.

So, Ute Fans, how about Hue Jackson as the OC? The guy has been very successful with his offenses, and the positions he has coached have done well as well. He is from Cali, so he has experience here, and when he was Cal's OC, they killed it. I think he would be at the top of my list right now.

Junior Salt has switched his commitment from Florida. He says he likes what Star has done, the publicity he has gotten, and wants to follow in his footsteps. A lot of kids coming in this weekend. Big weekend for Utah football! I am getting pumped. I read somewhere Utah has the 29th class in the nation right now, and after this weekend, that could jump.

Go UTES!
