What's new

Let's rehash the Derrick Fisher controversy

I never understood why folks got worked up about this. Fisher leaving was good for Fish, and Fisher leaving was good for the Jazz. I think the Jazz were actually happy to get out of paying him the balance of his salary. I mean look what they had to do to get out of Harpring's money.

It was a win/win situation, I think a lot of panties need to be unbunched.

I always wondered if Larry Miller contacted the commish when all this came down. I had no problem with Fisher getting out of his contract, but due to the unusual circumstances here the commish SHOULD have been involved from the get-go to put some stipulations on Fisher playing in the NBA. AT LEAST he should have been barred from signing with another team that season. I think everyone involved and the media too got caught up in the emotion of the situation and kinda forgot the NBA is still a business. This situation was flat out poorly handled from that standpoint.

I also remember an article regarding the Lakers where THEY contacted the NBA to ensure there were no stipulations in them signing Fisher. The tone of the article strongly implied Kupchak was incredulous there were NO STIPULATIONS AT ALL; they could just sign him whenever they wanted! Don't have a link, but I do remember reading it.

I don't care that he left, or that he went to the Lakers. What I do care about is that Utah fans got labeled as classless for booing. That's what bugged me. Because the media didn't tell the whole story. They just made it seem like we are all a bunch of uncaring a-holes.

Never quite understood why the couldn't work out a trade with the Lakers, Knicks, or Cleveland (which was also a possible destination for the retinal blastoma treatment), rather than completely give him away. At the time, the Lakers had Jordan Farmar, Brian Cook, and Ronny Turiaff who would have been good assets for the Jazz for the following season.

Why?

Everyone's been speculating on Fisher's motives, but why not look at the Jazz' motives? They got out of a multi-year bad contract for free. No buyout. No losing draft picks. Nothing. Why should have there been stipulations? It was an unprecedented move because both parties wanted it. Jazz spin it as a gesture of good will toward Fisher, while they get both a PR boost and money to spend, while Fisher gets to sign anywhere he wants based on the needs of his daughter.

Man, Lied isn't even that hot. She looks like a girl who goes to the tanning both once a week and wears 50$ of makeup per week.

Until I walk a day in his shoes (being a father of a little girl who has a rare form of cancer in her eye), I won't spend a second trying to judge him.
Ummmm, you do know his daughter got treatment in New York, Fisher asked out of this contract so he could be with her then turned right around and signed with LA.

I must confess what we all already know. We were not really in the loop about this whole situation. Constructing the " Truth" now is almost impossible. My memories and impressions correlate very strongly with the initiator of this thread though. However, I would not boo Derek Fisher or any other player for leaving this team. But, I did believe (perhaps wrongly) at the time that their was something very odd and shady about the whole situation. I heard the press conference also (the initial one) and was definitely under the impression from his own words that NOWHERE in the country could his daughter get the proper care but in New York.
This is why i hated having him on our team from the start. All these fans from California have grand delusions about who they are because of the success of the Lakers. There is no reflected glory when YOUR team wins a championship. They won it and it means something important to them (may this never change) As a fan we have achieved exactly nothing except being a fan. If, we should be so fortunate to have this happen for our Jazz someday( a championship), lets try to remember that the players and the organization are the victors. We only hoped and cheered for their success. Be happy for their happiness.
As far as booing Deron, please don't!! He was traded, he did not quit us. Karl was the only guy other than Derek Fisher to QUIT us, and it still hurts. That's why the Fisher situation is so emotional for Jazz fans.

I know, too many words.
