What's new

John Collins = Marvin Williams

Hard eyeroll on the "not reluctant" part. It's an issue for KO. You can tell when he does force a 3 because he will somewhat regularly hard brick 3s when he feels he has to shoot.
Hard eyeroll at the whole idea of KO being a worse shooter than JC.

Volume matters.
Yes it does... KO over his career has shot 5.2 3s per 36. This year he is shooting less but he's like doubled his assists per minute and is 63% on 2s... John is shooting 4.7 3s per 36 this year... it is the highest rate of his career.

But sure KO is scared to shoot.

He's not scared... but for a 42% shooter, passing up wide open 3's and lumbering in slow motion to the basket for a contested floater or tough shovel pass doesn't make any sense. I like Olynyk but that part of his game is absolutely infuriating.

Manufacturing wide open 3 point looks for very good shooters is hard in the NBA, and wasting them is criminal.

Also... John isn't Mike Conley trying to figure things out and is way off of his averages and the player he has been. He's not Rudy and KAT trying to figure things out. He's not far off of the player he has been his most recent career and actually has improved on one of his biggest issues/questions with 3 point shooting. The +/- stuff should be better but don't expect some light switch to get flipped.

He should shoot more threes but when you are getting as many assists and shooting 63% from 2 its tough to complain too much. Like Jokic could shoot more threes than he does but he has other things he needs to do on the court. KO's not Jokic but I think his reasoning for passing on shots is similar. I'd prefer he shoot a few more but I have a feeling he does what the team needs him to do on a given night and this year they've needed him to do those other things.

I don't want him to force things, but you just have to take every single wide open 3 in modern NBA basketball if you're hitting over 42%. To do anything else is a gift to the other team.

I know Olynyk has a strong passing mindset and he loves to dribble into the middle to look for lob and bounce pass opportunities... but he needs to be almost flawless at facilitating dunks and layups, otherwise the tradeoff isn't worth it.

He’s not as bad as +\- suggests, but he has indeed been awful on defense and significantly worse than he ever was in ATL. It didn’t matter if he was playing with or without Kessler, he’s gotten rinsed this year.

Like I get it….he can’t possibly be responsible for us being 13 points worse on defense with him. But you can be a lot better than that while still being very bad. I thought that in his later years in ATL his defense picked up while his offensive role diminished. He was a decent man to man matchup against a variety of players and that combined with his rebounding made him a neutral-ish defender. The numbers seem to reflect this as well.

I don’t think he’s been worst player/defender in the league bad, but still very disappointing in that regard. On the bright side, I do think his finishing around the basket is on the right track. The new rotation+improved guard play is working like a charm.

It's because he's not that good at shooting. He has to catch it in a very specific way to feel comfortable letting it go
