They are old as **** and it’s not long before they will have to rebuild. Could be why, or they want to just get younger, so they tried to see if they could sign him on the cheap

Normally, I would agree, but this could be his last contract as a star, and he might want to go championship chasing if there’s a contender willing to sign him if not, then sure.
May be low balling on the amount of years offered would be my best guess. (If it's true)
