Bogut was saying on his podcast today that FIBA want to pull basketball from the Olympic schedule and just leave 3v3 basketball as an Olympic sport. They are apparently dissatisfied with the commercial impact the Olympics has on the World Championships and the IOC doesn't do any profit sharing.

Kind of makes sense. It's not like anyone cares about Olympic Soccer(Football), so it is kind of weird that we have these two international basketball events. Basically only America places the Olympics over FIBA Cup, so it creates this weird dynamic given the fact America is the most important basketball country

Football generates the most revenue for the host countries and outside of North America and Australasia I believe it is one of the most watched television sports, so broadcasters get to cash in . I also have a hunch that basketball is probably one of the most watched Olympic events and it lasts a couple of hours so plenty of ads. I'd not be surprised if the IOC is making an absolute packet off it.

I think for us the Olympic medal means more that the world champs, Ask Lauren Jackson if she'd swap her world champs gold for Olympics i reckon she'd do it in a heartbeat.

FIFA was pretty smart making it an U23 tournament, the youth world cups draw crowds of 10-15 thousand, Olympic football is generally played to full houses. Making it a youth event protects their top products like the World Cup and the various confederation's cups.
