The second sentence absolutely reinforces the suggestion of service to others.Well your second sentence was ambiguous.
For those championing compulsory military service here’s a study with the following findings:
“Our results show that the compulsory military service has a strong and long-lasting negative effect on physical health. Moreover, people who are drafted into the armed forces are more likely to consume more alcohol and cigarettes even years after they are discharged. Our results are of great interest to decision-makers weighing the pros and cons of conscription armies: mandatory military service adversely affects the male labor force and exacerbates drinking and smoking behavior.”

Not trying to make it a big deal, it started out answering the question as to why Lauri’s mandatory military service was cut short. It's because drinking and smoking are extremely prevalent in South Korean military (according to the paper you linked). This is a more culture-specific finding than a general consequence of civil service. Finland is just about the most peaceful country on earth. You're making too big a deal out of this.
DG. I got 23d extra leave for being athletic, able to shoot and not a total moron. I spent last four weeks basically at home. I would imagine Markkanen would have been eligible for 12d or so and that's two weeks off base duty. 3d I got from two separate regiment commanders for we/I exceeded expectations. That's their prerogative in any given army that I heard of. Fairly confident it's all by the books. You’ve got an idea as to why? Let’s share it.
So it’s all arbitrary?DG. I got 23d extra leave for being athletic, able to shoot and not a total moron. I spent last four weeks basically at home. Actually its a norm that states all athletes are eligible for 45-95 days of training leave/commandments depending on their level. Lauri was certainly eligible for the maximum. So it’s all arbitrary?
Seems like they’ve left it a lot of room for the officials to be “creative” with their leniency… lol..
