Following Potential 2025 Draftees

This is the first draft that I've paid much attention to Sam Vecine, and it is interesting to listen to his perspective. He's pretty down on this draft. He says he likes his top 5 (Cooper, Dylan, Egor, Kas, Ace), but outside of that he's not very excited. He didn't say this, but it feels like his main point is that the guys that are playing well are guys that are hard to project as being true difference makers in the NBA and the guys who have disappointed were the guys that had a more projectable NBA role. I disagree that this is a bad draft, but I can see his point, even if he didn't directly make it.

I generally agree that this draft isn’t that exceptional outside the top 5 or 6 guys.

I think it’s a draft where you can find some decent starters, guys like Cam Johnson, Coby White, Naz Reid, etc. up to about the low 20s.

Ehh, I just see prime Harden every time I watch Harper. You know what's coming every time and you just can't stop it.

(Obviously Harper needs to be great at making stepback threes to actually be prime Harden)

Fears is like SGA (but again, very small) in that he could change direction in a way you don't expect at basically any step.
Harper is big body Brunson. Which might be Harden like but I hate Harden so I don’t want to comp anyone I like to him lol.

Kanon Catchings going off tonight for BYU. His breakout game

he has excellent mechanics and it terms of indicators, i'm not sure how many there are, but you take away one game where something was clearly off and he went 1-8 FTs, he's a 76% FT shooter on the year. that's not elite but is good. if you watch the kind of shots he takes, his 35% 3pt is a minor miracle - the fact that he takes so many tough shots is a problem, but he does make a pretty solid amount of them which speaks to his shooting ability. 46% FGs and 35% 3pt is average is average, but difficulty adjusted, just watching his games, it's pretty impressive. the biggest thing is shooting stroke is basically flawless.

Good form =\= good shooting. There’s no measurable way to determine how “good” form is anyways, so it’s not saying much. His 3 point volume is also not super high and the large majority of his makes are assisted. He takes tough shots from 2 and makes them, the degree of difficulty and volume on his 3’s is not the same. And I just can’t arguments where you selectively take out a large chuck of an already small sample size. Everything counts, can’t pick and choose which makes and misses matter.

This doesn’t mean he can’t be a good shooter, but constantly being compared to truly elite shooters is a mistake. If he can be compared to elite shooters, we have a long list of elite shooting prospects.

I'm becoming interested in McNeeley as a candidate for the Jazz's 2nd pick. His shooting is improving. He's handling more and his assists are up. Will be interesting to compare him to Gradey Dick by the end of the season.

Fland is my early pick for guy who exceeds his draft position. I'm guessing he gets picked lower than he should because of his size, but then kills it in the league because he's really good at basketball.

I wish Powell was further along. He looks like he could be really good at some point, but just has a long way to go.
