Former President Biden diagnosed with 'aggressive' prostate cancer

WASHINGTON — Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an "aggressive form" of prostate cancer that has metastasized to the bone, his office said in a statement on Sunday.

Biden, 82, was diagnosed on Friday after having experienced urinary symptoms, and he and his family are reviewing treatment options with doctors, the statement said.

Ignore the huge scandal and feel sorry for mush for brains....

Aversion to factual info, much? You might have asked yourself: if he knew he had prostate cancer 3 years ago, why did he and his doctor let it reach a Gleason score of 9? Why would they wait and let it metastasize in his bones? Did that much slip by your thought process?

Bro! This is the biggest scandal there has ever been... for some reason that I can't put my finger on.

Okay doc. Maybe the treatment is also what contributed to his brain melting. He's a geriatric brain dead man that ***** himself and is approaching 80 years of age. What treatment is a frail old man with a melted brain going to get? He's been circling the drain for years. Where's your critical thinking?

I do get why some are suspicious, but the opinion of urologists regarding the notion he knew years ago is mixed…

I had prostate cancer, Gleason scale 7, so intermediate, and PSA of 24. The urologist did biopsies when the PSA spiked that high. No cancer. I had at least one or two more biopsies, no cancer. Over a year went by. Urologist actually complained to me that “you should have cancer”. He sounded so disappointed the day he said that, I decided I would change urologists if and when he finally detected cancer. He was rooting for the cancer. I’m sure I had prostate cancer well before the biopsy was positive. But until a biopsy was positive, they did nothing.

While it's unclear exactly how long Biden has had cancer, its rapid spread is attributed to it being an aggressive form of the disease. His cancer was categorized as having a Gleason score of 9, which places him in Grade Group 5, the most severe category. The Gleason score is a system for grading the severity of prostate cancer based on analysis of cell samples under a microscope.

When prostate cancer is more advanced and spreads, the bones are among the areas most likely to be affected. It can also commonly spread to the lymph nodes, liver or lungs, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Unfortunately, late-stage cancer diagnoses are not uncommon. A 2014 analysis from Cancer Research UK, for example, found that 46% of all cancers in that country were diagnosed at an advanced stage. A 2023 study published in the journal Lancet Oncology found disruptions in care amid the pandemic also led to an increase in late-stage diagnoses across nearly all cancer types, including prostate.

Slower-growing cancers can take years to develop and be detected, while more aggressive ones can become apparent more rapidly and also spread to other parts of the body quicker….

Biden, who is now 82, did not undergo prostate cancer screening during his last medical checkup while in office, in February 2024, according to recordsreleased at the time. Experts say this is likely due to that fact that these screenings are not routinely recommended for men 70 years or older.

"Doctors will stop screening for prostate cancer at 75 or so, because after that, the prostate cancers you typically pick up are very slow growing, and so the harms of all of the testing and treatment for something that may not kill you — you're talking about risk versus benefit. It may not be worth the risk," Dr. Céline Gounder, CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, explained on "CBS Mornings" Monday.

Instead, Biden's diagnosis came after he recently saw a doctor due to urinary symptoms. A small nodule was found in the prostate, which necessitated further evaluation, his office said last week….

…..Back in 2019, Biden was diagnosed with benign enlargement of the prostate, or BPH. That December, his campaign released his medical evaluation, which noted: "This patient has been treated for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). This was initially treated with medication and was then definitively treated with surgery. He has never had prostate cancer."

Maybe they are lying about this or maybe not. The reality is we already know they have been lying about Joe and his health during his presidency- period full stop! They want people talking about his cancer instead of his corruption and his melted brain. It's awfully convenient that this cancer diagnosis and sympathy come out at the same time as the damning Hur recordings. It's pathetic to discuss this cancer specifically. The more damaging lies we already know about. He served as a puppet to the oligarchy for most of his presidency because he was full retard as president.

Coverup for what? Why would it be covered up?
I’m not sure but I think he’s claiming that Biden maybe has had cancer and it was covered up for years or something stupid? He probably knows that his followers are too stupid to remember that the 24 election was between Harris not Biden. The appropriate response should’ve been, “cancer sucks, wish him all the best.” Which is why classy smart people won’t miss when Trump is gone. The only people who still support Trump are dumber than rocks and/or ****** people.

It’s the same stupid d bag nonsense that inspired all the gross jokes about Pelosi’s husband. Trump and Trumpism is permission to be an ***. It’s liberating and fun!

I did look into this somewhat. My first thought, when I heard the news, is why did it get to this stage and was not detected until very recently? I know I had PSA bloodwork twice a year when it started being a high number. And a digital exam as well.

But, if I don’t have to reach for conspiracy theories, I likely won’t. If he was being treated with hormone therapy already, I don’t see why they would suggest it now, since the diagnosis that was announced demonstrates that if he was having hormone therapy, it obviously failed. So why recommend hormone therapy now? Whatever the reason for his cognitive decline, it’s not likely from hormone therapy.

I understand the reality of the cognitive decline, but it seems very, very doubtful it was from hormone therapy. IMO. I’m not a doctor, but that just seems like a logical conclusion.

And it’s not necessary to reach for conspiracy. The health report a year ago, early 2024, showed no PSA bloodwork. I was not aware of it myself, until looking into yesterday but many doctors cease PSA blood work for men over 75, some by age 70. I don’t know if that was the case with Biden. He did have an enlarged prostate when examined in 2019.

Former President Joe Biden’s office said Sunday that he has been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer and is reviewing treatment options with his doctors.

Biden, 82, was having increasing urinary symptoms and was seen last week by doctors who found a prostate nodule. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and the cancer cells have spread to the bone, his office said in a statement.

“It’s a very common scenario,” said Dr. Matthew Smith of Massachusetts General Brigham Cancer Center. Men can “feel completely well and a diagnosis of metastatic prostate cancer could come as quite a surprise.”

Guidelines recommend against prostate cancer screening for men 70 and older so Biden may not have been getting regular PSA blood tests, Smith said. What’s more, while the PSA test can help flag some cancers in some men, it does not do a great job of identifying aggressive prostate cancer, Smith said….

Should older men get screened?

Screening with PSA blood tests can lead to unnecessary treatment with side effects that affect quality of life. Guidelines recommend against PSA screening for men 70 and older.

The PSA test looks for high levels of a protein that may mean cancer but can also be caused by less serious prostate problems or even vigorous exercise.

For men aged 55 to 69 the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says screening “offers a small potential benefit of reducing the chance of death from prostate cancer in some men.” The task force adds that “many men will experience potential harms of screening, including false-positive results that require additional testing and possible prostate biopsy; overdiagnosis and overtreatment; and treatment complications, such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction.”

Is late-stage diagnosis more common in older men?

Yes. Of all men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2017 and 2021 whose cancer staging was recorded, men 75 and older were more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage disease compared to those younger than 75.

One in five men 75 and older with prostate cancer were diagnosed with cancer that had metastasized, compared to just 6.3% of men under 75, according to an AP analysis of federal data from the U.S. Cancer Statistics Working Group.

Between 2017 and 2021, 90,551 men were diagnosed with late-stage prostate cancer, representing around 8.8% of prostate cancer diagnoses. More than 40% of them were 75 or older.

Q. How is it that Biden’s cancer was detected at such an advanced stage?

A. Everyone is asking me that same question. I have two speculations. One is that prostate cancer screening guidelines in the United States recommend stopping prostate cancer screening after age 75. It’s uncommon to continue to check a PSA every year beyond the age of 75 if your PSA has been fine prior to that.

The other possibility could be that his prostate cancer is so aggressive or de-differentiated that it actually stopped making PSA. It’s an unusual situation. Now, another (possibility) is … maybe he’d had biopsies in the past that didn’t show cancer, and the biopsy just happened to miss it.

Doctors not involved in the former president's care said his diagnosis shows the nuance and challenges of screening for prostate cancer.

Some, including President Donald Trump, have suggested that Biden likely knew about his cancer for a long time. But it's possible, several doctors said, that his tumor was missed or that he has a particularly aggressive form of cancer that was unlikely to be detected by routine testing.

Because prostate cancer is typically so slow-growing, men over 70 are not recommended for routine screening.

"He could be receiving the best medical care that we have to offer as a nation and not be screened for prostate cancer," said Dr. Michael Morris, a Memorial Sloan Kettering oncologist who specializes in treating men with prostate cancer. "Excellent care means not under-testing. It also means not over-testing."

Sounds like Biden was 71 years old at the time of his last PSA blood work.

Former United States President Joe Biden was not diagnosed with prostate cancer before last week, and received his “last known” blood test for the disease more than a decade ago, his office has said.

The Biden camp’s statement on Tuesday came as critics, including current President Donald Trump, stoked scepticism over the timing of the diagnosis, which has reanimated questions about whether the former president misled the public about his health while in office.

“President Biden’s last known PSA was in 2014,” Biden’s office said in the brief statement, referring to the prostate-specific antigen test used to detect prostate cancer.

“Prior to Friday, President Biden had never been diagnosed with prostate cancer.”

On Monday, Trump said he was “surprised” that the public had not been notified about Biden’s diagnosis “a long time ago”.

“Why did it take so long? This takes a long time. It can take years to get this level of danger,” Trump told reporters at the White House, referring to the advanced nature of Biden’s cancer.

“Somebody is not telling the facts, and that’s a big problem,” Trump said.

Biden’s office said on Sunday that the former president had, two days earlier, been diagnosed with prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.

Biden’s office said his cancer had score of 9 under the Gleason classification system, which grades prostate cancer from 6 to 10, indicating it is among the most aggressive kinds.

While some doctors have expressed doubt that Biden, 82, was not diagnosed earlier given his access to the best medical care, others have noted that screening is generally not recommended for men of his age and that some cancers do not show up in tests.

I hate that they actually answered this. This kind of **** gives him validity. Just let it go. Doesn't matter when it was diagnosed. Trump is the little kid calling him a liar and this is the equivalent of Biden yelling back at him "nuh-uh, I am TOO telling the truth". It's just a bad look.

I suppose. But I think it’s good to nip it in the bud too. With the book released yesterday, concerning his cognitive decline, why add “he had stage 4 cancer the whole time, and hid it!” to the mix. When it’s not true at all. I understand, but Biden’s people responded, and it should remove the accusation from MAGA’s interpretation of the Biden presidency.

Funny, maybe not funny, much of the conflict were experiencing is over the writing of history. Trump is determined, like the authoritarian wanna be dictator he is, to rewrite American history to his liking. He set up the Big Lie years in advance, by predicting future American history: if he lost, in 2016, it could only be because the Democratic Party stole the 2016 election. So, the Big Lie, that triggered the 1/6/21 attack on the People’s House, was prefaced long before 2020. Using the rewriting of history to advance his efforts to seize power seems to have been part of his diabolical plan all along. As a demagogue, he’s a genius in that respect. His method of talking his own reality into existence, making his history the only acceptable history of the last 10 years, created the situation that his party cannot deviate from his lies. His party must back his fake history. It was a genius move, given the need of politicians to please their constituents, and it was an evil move. The guy’s downright evil.

Anyway, I hear you, it is childish, but I can’t fault correcting Trump’s lies, esp. when they amount to rewriting history.
