What's new

I can’t afford this Trump economy

How are home prices? Cheap now?

What about groceries?

Has Donald revealed his health care reform or is it still two weeks ago?

How about the price of eggs?

Trump and the GOP claim to be the party of the working class slob but look at how they go after someone trying to make things more affordable for the working class slob

What is minimum wage in a city like New York, i would imagine its quite high. I would assume cost of living in NY is pretty high.

$16.50.

Cost of living for an individual in NYC is $4130, for a family it's just shy of $9000

16.50 x 40 = 660
660 x 4 = 2640

Our minimum wage is NOT designed to allow a person working full time to actually live.

And the Republicans keep wanting to scare us with socialism. Make capitalism work and I'm ready to tell socialism to **** right off. In the meantime being able to afford to live is sounding pretty good to me, by whatever means.

I don’t want to hear from the butt ****ers whining about how raising the minimum wage will raise the cost of stuff while they also cheer on insanely high tariffs, trade embargoes, and tax cuts for billionaires. These aren’t serious thinkers. I say raise the **** out of min wage and see what happens. For my entire adult life I’ve seen Republican administration after Republican administration pay back their donors with massive tax cuts that haven’t done squat for average people. So I say we go “socialist” and give min wage folks hella good wages and see what happens. We can call it “trickle up” economics and give it a whirl. After all, we’ve tried 40 years now of nonsensical trickle down crap.

How many workers are actually paid that minimum wage? So minimum wage in my old job was something like 23 bucks, i was on 50+

immigration control (White Australia) and tariffs are the reason that Australian wages are considerably higher than US wages, while i dont think that is the reason for the democratic socialist nature of our society (historically strong unions) its certainly had an influence.

That I don't know, but I do know that unskilled labor has no power and the primary way for an unskilled laborer to make more than min wage is to do a job that most people are not willing to do, for whatever reason. A cushy cash register job? Min wage for you and most will not hire full time because they don't want to pay for benefits, like health insurance. So an unskilled laborer will need two part time jobs, both without benefits (healthcare) just to get by. That also means they will never qualify for overtime pay. Anything over 40hrs a week has to be paid at 1.5x, but if you work two jobs you can work 70hrs a week and get no benefits and no overtime.

The response to this by our MAGA friends is to "git good" essentially. Work harder. Do more than everyone else and they will make you a team lead and give you full time after you've been there a few years, plus a $1 pay rise.

In the fishing village I live in called Melbourne, generally the only people who work for minimum wages are immigrants and children. Melbourne is routinely ranked as one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in, you need to earn close enough to 1000usd a week to get by. As an employer, you will struggle to get a local to work for the minimum and if they are they are likely stealing from you.

I’d be surprised if 50 percent of the population even notices this passed. And I doubt it’ll change most voting habits. Just look at **** holes like West Virginia or Arkansas or Mississippi. The worse things get the redder they vote. The gop has unlocked the code for political dominance. It’s not making government work better for more people. It’s the opposite: make government work for fewer people and hurt the majority. The more miserable people become, the more they indulge in hating the outgroups that the GOP has created; blacks, immigrants, and gays.

Good luck America

GOP ran the country off a cliff with wars and economic mismanagement. They lost in 2006 and 2008. But by 2010 they retook the House without doing anything other than stirring anger at a black president.

In 2019-2020, they once again drove the country off a cliff and even attempted an insurrection. But months into the 2021 Biden presidency that was memory holed.

How many people will even know that they just got hosed by the GOP’s tax cut for billionaires paid for by Medicaid recipients they just passed? How many people will even remember it come the 2026 midterms? The 2028 presidential election?

If Americans want real positive change then the electorate needs to punish the GOP to force positive change and empower Democrats to actually enact progressive reforms. Otherwise, just expect each presidency to pass one bill per 100 days of their presidency and then rule by executive order for the rest of the time. Meanwhile, democracy crumbles as needed reforms and laws go unpassed in the senate to die on a filibuster.
