Game Thread Oct 13, 2025 07:00PM MT: Dallas Mavericks @ Utah Jazz (Preseason)

Added to Calendar: 10-13-25

This game was the least enjoyable to watch out of the 3. I think i expected lauri or flip to come out and show something... they didnt.

Keyonte was awful.

Nurk grabbed 15 bounds. Guess how many the second person grabbed? 5 and 1 of the players was Walter.

Terrible game overall and not much to talk about

Lots to talk about though. Brice, Cody, Henny and WCJ all looking very encouraging. Nurk too.

Lauri looked really stiff and unathletic tonight. May just be easing in though.

Key at pg was rough tonight.

Those may have been the things I took from tonight.

Got some 10th row seats for super cheap on KSL right as the game was starting. Not a super great game, but still some nice points. Brice is an absolute bucket, and Harkless is awesome to watch on the sideline, the guy is hyped. Cody did 5 nice things and 10 bad things, so I think that's progress. Ace was a bit of a non-factor and Walt is not comfortable with NBA length yet.

minor note:
The jazz's perimeter defense looked really soft a lot of the time, and Walt looked like he saw and understood (and was frustrated by) the problems the team was having executing in this facet of the game. I didn't notice him closing out any harder or anything, though.

I've been hoping to see more effort and attention to defense during the preseason. I'm not watching very closely, but I haven't really detected that.

That lineup of Davis, Flagg, and Lively was always going to be difficult to score on. The paint was completely locked up, Lauri was locked up by Davis, and Keyonte was locked up by Flagg. Fortunately that lineup was pretty bad offensively for Dallas as well. I'm not sure what the NBA's obsession with "everyone is a point guard" these days. Just because a guy can dribble and pass, doesn't mean he can lead an offense.

The biggest positive of the night has to be Cody, in my opinion. I mean this sincerely, even though it sounds funny, but Cody's misses are much closer and is encouraging. Cody looking assertive and aggressive is great. He seems to be our only player capable of playing both good man defense and good help defense. We really need that.

Hardy plus the tanking make it really hard to evaluate how good any of these guys are at defense, but it's not really encouraging to be staring down three straight #30 finishes in defense.

I should look up if that has ever happened before, lol.

The defense was pretty good last night. Granted the Mavs just missed a lot of makeable 3's . It's just the offensive rebounds that killed them.
