Obama's War against Religion

The Thriller

Anyone else up to date on this? Just a sidenote... Why is it ok for insurance to pay for Viagra but not ok to use contraceptives? Which is worse? Birth control or abortions? Birth control or a bunch of illegitimate children running around? Thoughts?

The original rule exempted only churches, synagogues or mosques, not faith-based hospitals, schools and charities or private employers with conscience-objections to contraception. On Friday, Obama said faith-based employers could defer to their insurance companies, but individual private employers remain under the mandate.
A Fox News poll of 1,100 registered voters, conducted Feb. 6-9 before Obama's Friday announcement, found 61% of Americans say employer health plans should be required to cover birth control for women, while 34% disagreed. Among women, two-thirds approved of the requirement.

It's a mixed bag for Obama. His support among women is stronger than among men — 48% of women approved of the job he's doing in the most recent Gallup Poll, compared to 44% of men. Some women's groups faulted him for negotiating with Catholic bishops over the issue and have criticized him in the past for other decisions, such as blocking over-the-counter sales of the "morning after" birth control pill to girls under 17.
Republicans say they have Obama on the defensive because of his perceived overreach into church affairs. The National Republican Congressional Committee is using his effort in a fundraising appeal.
"In a country founded on religious liberty, Democrats have now done the unthinkable," NRCC Executive Director Guy Harrison wrote. "Democrats have inserted themselves into your health care, and now they want to insert their values into your religion."
"We all know how hard the right wing will fight to restrict women's rights - it appears to be their No. 1 goal!" countered Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, chairwoman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. "The very ability of women to participate equally in our society is at stake on Election Day."

It seems like the Democrats want to focus on the contraceptives part of the argument while Republicans want to focus on the government telling private entities (in this case churches) what they have to do. That is what I've gotten from this whole thing so far.

Freedom for employers to deny the rights their employees should have to certain coverage. The ironic thing is all these catholic organizations (that do a lot of good, don't get me wrong) receive government funding to begin with. But they can't be told to give their employees their earned health care?

Pay no taxes
get govern funding
don't have to play by the rules like anybody else

Isn't religion great?

Don't the employees have the freedom to go find another job (not working for their church) if they are unhappy with their insurance coverage, or lack thereof?

Nonsense fear mongering from Patty Murray. Her face is birth control enough.

sometimes that's easier said then done. if the largest employer (by far) in a community is a faith-based hospital or a faith-based university, they have to go outside their faith to find employees, and people in the community who need jobs and have limited means of transportation don't have many other options for employment.

Reminds me of the old George Carlin quote:
"Have you ever noticed the women who are against birth control/abortion are women you wouldn't want to **** in the first place?"

My favorite thing is how the right will in coming months overreach and you'll eventually see it come to a head with a bunch of nuts trying to ban condoms or something and a congressman from Arkansas having a meltdown on the house floor. If I'm Obama i'm not sweating; the social right will always overplay their hand. Obama is not "at war" with religion. Usually, the evangelicals and the few old Catholics who still hate birth-control are at war with the rest of us. Having the provide health care to their employees is hardly a violation of their rights. They act like Obama is making them drive said employees down to the drugstore...

Why is it ok for insurance to pay for Viagra but not ok to use contraceptives?

The difference here is that there is still a co-pay for Viagra. Obama has dictated that not just contraceptives, but also abortion inducing drugs be supplied free of charge.

My question is, why is birth control so critical that it is free of charge? No co-pay, free of charge. Is contraception more importnat than my wife's blood thinning med? How about my MIL's cancer treatment?

Also, if the WH starts dictating what insurance companies have to pay for how soon until they start telling insurance what they don't have to pay for? Do YOU really want the federal government telling your insurance company what they do or don't have to cover??

This isn't a war on religion, it's a war on freedom.

The real world answer is contraception is very, very cheap. Much cheaper than abortions or unwanted pregnancies; which insurance companies would most certainly see many more cliams for if contraception wasn't widely available. Why do you think you're not hearing much from the insurance industry regarding this decision? They're more than happy with this arrangement because it saves them money in the long run.

correct.

What's So Crucial About Free Contraceptives? Why Not Free Toothpaste? Where does it stop (hint: it doesn't)

I heard on the radio today that some kid brought a sack lunch to school, and it was confiscated by government agents who said it wasn't good enough. It lacked vegetables, so they gave the kid chicken nuggets (real healthy) and carrots and sent a bill to the mother (who had packed the sack lunch)
I"m not sure where this happened. I didn't hear the beginning.

How stupid does this have to get?

Car insurance doesn't cover gas or oil changes.

LOL. Even for you this is a moronic analogy.

Yes, car insurance doesn't cover gas or oil changes. But maybe that's because those things have nothing to do with insurance on your car. Since you mention it though, most policies offer discounts for having a safe driving record and for people who use car alarms.

You know, preventative stuff......like, um, contraception.

I just want to sit on Barak's lap and have him tell me that story about how Jesus loves his tax policy dreams again like he did last week when he was giving one of his speeches. It makes me all tingly inside. I'm so glad we have such a committed Christian in the White House.

Pretty amazing. Easy to avoid however by supporting a charter school.
