Celtics fan on Rondo...

I've been a Celtics fan for all my life, but have really taken a liking for teams like the Grizzlies and the Jazz. Younger, high energy teams that always seem to be on the cusp of being great but never quite jumping the fence. I was amazed when Danny Ainge pulled off the move for the Big 3, ecstatic when we won in 2008, and crushed when we blew it in 2010. Now however, rebuilding is definitely on the horizon, and Danny Ainge would trade his wife if possible, to make rebuilding as quick and smooth as possible for this team.

Looking at the Jazz, from the outside, it seems like they have great bigs but lack a distributer and a really good point guard to get them the ball. Is this accurate? Obviously, Rondo could be perfect for you guys as he is a Pass/Defense first PG on an extremely manageable contract, (10Mil 4 years). Watching every game every night, I can give you pretty accurate pros and cons on the guy....

Pros
- One of if not the best passing PG in the league. Very creative and is a great floor manager. Will memorize everyone's spots and feed them the ball there.
- Great Defender; can shut guys down if he really wants to. Takes chances at times, but he hits on a lot of the gambles he takes.
- Rebounding pads his rebounding stats a bit, especially if he is close to a triple double, however he averages about 5-6 a game.
- Fast Breaks, Since the Celtics players are mostly reanimated corpses and slow, oft-injured, old men he has become really good at running fast breaks. Either finishing with a layup or passing to someone to finish.
- Scoring Not jumpshots, (we'll get to that later) but he averages over 14ppg and he can score at will, mostly by driving to the basket, if he really pushes himself, or if it is an important game.
- Effort/Drive Rondo, especially big game/playoff Rondo goes all out, diving for balls, sacrificing his body, and playing through injury. (See last year dislocating his elbow and still playing against the heat). He loves the game, and isn't just in it for the money.

Cons

- Inconsistency Last night against the Bucks, Rondo scored a triple double with 15 points, 11 Rebounds, and 10 Assists. The game before? 0 Points, 3 Rebounds, and 11 Assists. When Rondo really wants to, he can step up and play at an elite, top PG in the league style game. (See here) Problem is, he doesn't become that player that often. Maybe it's because his body can't handle it, who knows.
- Free Throws Rondo is bad Free throw shooter...plain and simple. He is shooting 61%...61% Horrible for a PG.
- Jumpshots Contrary to popular belief, Rondo can hit jumpshots...However after years constantly feeding the big 3 and never looking to shoot for himself, he has very little confidence in his shot, and rarely takes 16 footers.
- Personality Rondo is a sensitive guy and has a hard time dealing with constructive criticism. Him "fighting" with Doc Rivers is ridiculous is overblown and any bickering probably stems from Rondo not taking criticism well. He can step up and look like the best PG in the league against tougher opponents, but might take the night off in random games.

Overall, I'd say Rondo is a great player and I love having him on my team...5th best PG IMO...However, I would definitely be okay trading him to The Jazz. We already have 2 firsts, and if we can net more first round picks and trade up to get a lottery player, I would totally do that.

As a Celtics fan, I'd be most interested in picks/young players to help with rebuilding. Would you guys do Harris and your first? If not than what else? I'm interested what you guys think. If you have any questions, I could give you a Boston fans perspective.

Thanks for the input on Rondo, it's appreciated since most of us haven't seen Rondo play more than a game here and there. As far as I can tell, the popular trades are Millsap + Harris or Jefferson + Harris for Rondo, with maybe a first round pick in next year's draft. I don't really do a lot with the trades haha, but seriously, thanks for the informative post on Rondo.

As you said "Ainge would trade his wife if possible, to make rebuilding as quick and smooth as possible for this team.', I believe that PKM would do the same for Rondo after his recent campaign for the guy. I like his passion! Don't know if I'm as sold as he is, but thanks for the info and a good first post. I rep'd you for it. That means your life is going to change in an amazing way, I think.

If I was KOC and that offer was on the table I could not say yes fast enough. Harris plus GS pick? Yes, hell yes, **** yes, **** ya. We could then trade Jefferson or Millsap for a decent wing and still have our draft pick plus some cap space after next year. If only we could negotiate with you sir I would a happy man.

Rondo for Harris and our first-round pick? Yeah, I'd do that, but I might make some contingency move to make sure the Jazz keep the pick if it's Top 8, or use the GSW pick. In other words, it might make more sense to do something like this on draft day when we know where the Jazz pick and GSW pick are going to fall and we can even things out with another player or later pick if need be.

PGs tend to take a few years before they're ready to lead a team, so Rondo is really in his prime. If the Jazz could pick up Quincy Miller in the 2012 draft and trade for Rondo, we'd be in good shape.

Rondo, Burks, Miller/Hayward, Favors/Millsap, Jefferson/Kanter. That would be one of the most versatile and best-passing teams in the league. We'd still need one of our wings to step up as a go-to scorer though.

It's no campaign. Just giving insight, for those that care to read it. My opinion is he's underrated more than overrated ... but not a campaign.

Light innocuous jabs are always difficult to communicate, but I think it's fair to say that you are definitely his top supporter on the Fanz, which isn't a bad thing since you guys have history.

I think this past Feb, Harris has shown that he still has game. So it's a matter of how you (Ainge) view Jefferson?
I've been advocating all along that Harris/Jefferson plus a conditional pick for Rondo this summer (works financially).
IMO it keeps Boston in contention if they would resign Allen/KG (Harris-Allen-Pierce-KG-Jefferson).

Thanks for the post. Now give us Rondo for CJ, Raja, and Howard.

Honestly sounds gross to me...Look here at what the trade machine says. Bad for both teams. I wouldn't want to give away the Celtics best player for 3 players, none of whom are one of the two best players on your team...If you threw in your first though, I would really consider that though.

Jefferson, Harris, and a 1st for Rondo? You guys would be getting ripped off horribly. What about Jefferson, Watson, and your first round pick, for Rondo, Wilcox, Steimsma, and the Clippers 1st round pick? Seems more realistic/even that way.

Ha, mine was a joke .. just trying to rape the Celts.

I think most of us would take Jefferson+Harris+GS pick for Rondo+random big. I don't think it's much of a rip off at all.

Ohh you probably did not know. On jazzfanz we think al is worth a 2 nd round pick at the most.

I meant maybe a 1st if we absolutely have to. I would prefer Jefferson and Harris for Rondo but according to the trade machine that wouldn't work. We could do Jefferson for Rondo and Wilcox which I would do, not sure if Ainge would. I would also be down for the trade you proposed above if you swap out our first round pick with the Warriors 1st round pick.

Good post. Thanks for the insight on Rondo. I'd do Al or Paul + Harris and maybe a protected pick, or better yet just Harris and a pick.

I'd give a sperm donation for Rondo. Freeze it, implant it, whatever -- it's worth at least 10m and will likely end up being the top player in the 2030 draft.
