What's new

Sex Education

Because it does.

There isn't any data available that suggests that sex education encourages students to engage in sexual activities that would otherwise not participate in.

A recent study showed that nearly 70 % of all American students have engaged in sex by their senior year. No program is going to bring that anywhere close to zero.

65 % of all new STD cases are contracted by those under the age of 24. 1 out of 4 new HIV cases in the United States are contracted by people under the age of 22.

In other words, (most) kids are having sex. Most STDs and HIV occurs in teens/early 20s. Think they want AIDS? Think they want STDs? If they aren't going to stop having sex, then we might as well teach them how to have safe sex. These principles will then help them in their married lives.

How would you know how many?

Ever lived in Utah? Ever dated a Mormon girl? Ever been in or taught a sex education class in Utah? You'd be surprised the ignorance of the youth. Then again, can you blame them? If no one teaches them, how will they know? MTV and porn can only teach so much....

All the studies I have seen show that contraceptive use among married couples is on the rise. If just 19 percent of married couples use contraception, how many millions of people then, are using it? *gasp* breaking new, but married people use this stuff too...

this is enlightening.

Not necessarily to Millsapa, cuz he's a troll. But to those who actually might be interested.

For the estimated 62 million women of reproductive age in the United States, “virtually all of them will use a contraceptive method other than natural family planning at some point in their lives,” regardless of their religious beliefs, states the Guttmacher Institute in a new report, Countering Conventional Wisdom: New Evidence on Religion and Contraceptive Use.

The report showed that, “among all women who have had sex, 99% have ever used a contraceptive method other than natural family planning” and that “this figure is virtually the same, 98%, among sexually experienced Catholic women.”

“This research suggests that the perception that strongly held religious beliefs and contraceptive use are antithetical is wrong – in fact, the two may be highly compatible,” reads the Guttmacher report. “Contraceptive use by Catholics and Evangelicals, including those who frequently attend religious services, is the widespread norm, not the exception.”

The data showed that 83 percent of women of reproductive age (15 to 44) have a religious affiliation: 48 percent Protestant; 25 percent Catholic; and 11 percent identify with another religion, such as Buddhism, Islam and Judaism.

Among that 83 percent of women of reproductive age, 33 percent go to church at least once a week, according to the report, and 20 percent go monthly and 26 percent less than once a month. Another 20 percent do not attend church at all.

Sexual experience among never-married women of all religious affiliations is fairly common, according to the survey, with 69 percent (ages 15 to 44) saying they have engaged in sexual activity at some point in their lives.

In addition, for all women who are sexually active – married and unmarried – the data show that 69 percent use some form of artificial birth control, such as sterilization (33 percent), the Pill (31 percent), IUD (5 percent) and condom (14 percent).

The report noted that, “While Catholic and Evangelical women are slightly more likely than Mainline Protestants to be married; patterns of contraceptive use do not differ by religious affiliation among married women.”

Of course being told they can have "safe" consequence free sex encourages activity where there wouldn't otherwise be. That is just common sense.

I've lived in Utah most of my life. Yes I've dated several Mormon guys. If I judged all Mormon guys by them I'd say they were all horndogs.

So you are claiming you know how many married couples are clueless about sex (despite sex ed in government schools) because you live in Utah or have dated a Mormon girl?

What I meant was that it's always a bad thing for people who actually care about what they do, and want to make their own choices in life. It's a bad thing when you can't make that decision on your own personal and private life.

Funny then, that the same conservative politicians that are so worried about "big government" taking rights away from parents are so interested in taking rights away from women and homosexuals.

The problem is that, because so many people view sex as this dirty thing that needs to be hidden and tucked away and never talked about, it suddenly becomes this giant issue when people wish to educate children on the subject.

What rights do they want to take away from females?

Stop pretending you're a girl.

I knew all about the "safe consequences" and chose not to participate in "free sex". Nor did I feel it encouraged me to do so.

I think it should be taught to highschool students but sex has no place in the elementary schools, middle school is debatable. Also I'd take a long close look at what is taught. Ignoring the issue is stupid.

It has a place in 5th grade during the maturation program where the kids learn about their changing bodies and the purpose behind it.
