Sex Education

I haven't heard a single person say anything about taking away contraceptives.

But that is the cool way to spin the conservative right not wanting insurance be required to pay for it.

The problem is that, because so many people view sex as this dirty thing that needs to be hidden and tucked away and never talked about, it suddenly becomes this giant issue when people wish to educate children on the subject.

This ain't about teaching the mechanics of sex and the reproductive system. It is about teaching a morality that is contrary to the parents, who have the responsibility for their children and have to deal with the consequences of a sexually active teen. It ain't like the teacher is gonna be there for the kid when the "safe" methods they taught fail to protect their students from disease or pregnancy, or the emotional fall out.

I know Santorum has made some pretty controversial (to some) statements about birth control, but you may indeed be correct that he doesn't hold a firm stance about taking it away outright.

However, I know for a fact that he has claimed that birth control is "harmful to society" and "harmful to women".

Things like birth control and abortion are never going to be abolished and I think conservatives know that, but there are some conservatives -- ones like Santorum, Perry and Bachmann that lean on religion -- who's personal opposition to those issues is frightening to me.

Regardless, even though I'm passionate about these sorts of social issues that come up frequently in political debates, I often grow tired of hearing about them. They're important issues that matter to a lot of people, but I feel many politicians use them as a smokescreen to avoid talking about the things that effect the nation as a whole in the long term, like economic and foreign policy issues.

Plus, it's easy to grow frustrated when the only arguments some people can muster are "but but but the bible says!"(not saying anyone here, just people I know and other talking heads on TV and radio).

Your post doesn't relate to anything I said.

The parents and conservatives that think sex-ed should be talked about in school don't want sex talked about it schools, period. Regardless if it's a biological lesson or a personal health one.

There is this asinine belief that talking about sex in school and teaching safe sex methods will lead to kids having more sex.

Teenagers are gonna ****. Unless you start locking teen girls in chastity belts (which I'm sure some fathers would love to do) you're not going to stop them from putting a P in the V.

That sentence was clear as mud. I thought we were talking about this specific bill and those supporting it. The bill is about giving the school districts the choice between teaching abstinence only sex ed or not teaching it at all. Abstinence only sex ed does teach the biology of it.

Sex education does not lead kids to sex - hormones lead kids to sex.
