As much as we criticize KOC for past draft failures, we have to acknowkedge he's hit the last 3 picks out of the park. And I'll even give him some credit for Favors, since Derrick was the big he was trying to trade up for and he was the cornerstone of the Williams trade.

We had a draft ranking thread a few days ago. Let's do this a bit different. You're the GM and can go back in time to the previous two drafts. Jazz have the same drafting position...and I'll also include the NJ pick from 2010 since we now have Favors.

The questions are...
1. At #3 and #9 in 2010 would you take anyone else over Favors and Hayward?
2. At #3 and #9 in 2011 would you still take Kanter and Burks.

There are too many alternatives to put in all the various choices, so I'll just put each Jazz player and then underneath each one, "Other." Please tick four boxes, one for each pick. And if you mark "Other" for any of the picks, please elaborate.
 
for me, the only questionable pick is Hayward over George. I like Hay, though... he'll be a player.
 
Have to admit I'm a homer. I picked all 4 current Jazz players. They're still raw but any of them could eventually be an all-star.

In 2010, I also like Monroe and George. Cousins is very good, but a big headcase. Hard to argue against Monroe's 16/10. He's more productive right now than Derrick, but Favors has the potential to be a truly dominant player. I'll admit I was incredibly disappointed when KOC announced the Hayward pick. I was wrong...dead wrong. This one is very close as George is a very good player and Gordon sometimes disappears. I'll give the edge to Flash based on his overall skills. And kudos to Ty for moving him to the bench. I think Hayward is going to put up some great numbers as the 6th man.

2011 - How can you argue with the picks? Kanter is a beast. Burks is everything we hoped CJ would become (but didn't). Had the Jazz drafted differently for need, a Knight and Vucevic or Faried draft would have been pretty good. And I know there are some Valanciunas fans on the board. I'll stick with the Jazz picks. Love Burks ability to create and score. And having a center who actually believes in playing tough, physical defense? Priceless!

IMO Favors has the best shot an Allstar appearance. Kanter the next best because of the dearth of centers. Burks has a reasonable chance.

I don't see the same talent ceiling for Hayward. I don't seem him getting that much better. He is still a good player and is going to have great games. But I don't seem him as good as Ginobili or other.
 
FWIW, Charles Barkley and the rest of the ESPN crew seem to give much more praise to Hayward, than they do to Paul George.

Most former NBA players are retarded with their current-player evaluations, but I always keep an open ear as to what Chuck has to say. He said that DWill was the best PG in 2010 during the playoffs, which was true. He then proclaimed Rose as the best PG in the league maybe a quarter into the 2011 season, which ended up coming true.




Regardless, I would definitely keep our four players if I was given the choice to re-draft, much like I would have chosen DWill every time, if I was given the choice of going over the 2005 Draft again.

Barkley, once you cut through the showmanship, has some pretty decent observations.

I'm a bit surprised the vote has been 2 to 1 for George over Hayward. I think Gordon will end up being the better overall player. He was a PG in high school. You don't find too many SF's with his ball-handling skills.

Well technically, they are the TNT*** crew. Kinda screwed that up. But usually, Chuck knows what he is talking about, and he seems to be seriously high on Hayward, calling him a future all star all the time.
 
I went with Hayward for 2010, simply because he plays very hard on both sides and is willing to be a facilitator. His hustle will pay off at some point.
 
Right now, it's hard to say that having Monroe and George wouldn't be better than what we have.

If George didn't have that growth spurt, it would be Hayward for me. But man, he's like 6'10'' now...Pacers got extremely lucky on that one.

Greg Monroe also averages a career 29.5 MPG, only halfway into his second season. I am willing to bet that if Favors was drafted at 7th by the Pistons, he'd be putting up similar numbers, while being better defensively as well.

And quite honestly, it is unwise to call George the better player as of right now. Most people would consider Hayward as the better SG last season. Now, after two thirds into both players' sophomore seasons, people all the sudden think that George will be much better.


Fact of the matter is: Hayward is currently a better Career 3 point shooter, better FG%, better assist numbers, better free throw shooter, all while aerating less minutes over both of their young careers. George just has the edge on steals (meh), Rebounding, and PPG.

I still choose Hayward over George, and I will probably continue to do so unless Hayward becomes a sixth man, and George becomes an all-star
