my last dumb phone

Usually many smartphones require a data package for extra 10 dollars a month to be bought or else they won't work? Not sure how this works...

Yeah, he already had a Blackberry. Actually, his bill might even go down a bit. I don't know if T-Mobile charges extra for the Blackberry services (everyone else does). So it might save him a few bucks per month, worse case scenario is the bill doesn't change.

He already has a smartphone and data package. And he may or may not be paying for Blackberry services on top of that.

Look for an Android phone that works on T-Mobile's 4G. Check KSL and Ebay, used ones are cheap.

The Exhibit 2 is only $200 brand new with no contract, so I'm sure you could get a used one for cheap. The Galaxy S 2 is about as good as it gets, but they're not cheap. The Sensation is pretty good too, but not dirt cheap either.

You can sell your Blackberry on Ebay to recoup some of the cost too.

For cheap though, you probably want to look for a used Exhibit 2. It's a pretty good bang for the buck brand new, so used will be the best value. And it's way better that any Blackberry. The web browsing is pretty good, camera is pretty decent quality, and if you ever get into apps (which you will) Android has tons of free ones. The device is much faster than a Blackberry too, you'll love it.

What are the things to look for/avoid if buying a used smartphone? My wife and I are thinking about it.

If it's a CDMA phone (Sprint, Verizon, Cricket) you want to make sure the ESN is clean. You'll have to call Sprint or Verizon for that.

Other than that, just make sure everything works and it's in good enough shape for you. You probably want to get one that has 4G too. Since the whole point of a smartphone is what you can do with the data, might as well get one that has good data speeds. If it has 4G, it probably has everything else you would care about.

I would stay away from Blackberry too. Either go with an Android (the best), Windows Phone (the up and coming), or an iPhone (the cool factor).

Ok, thanks. What if it's T-Mobile? No need to worry about anything since we'd have to use our own smart card thingy?

Some good advice. As far as 4G goes though make sure you live in a 4G area. (Like SLC or St George) My town does not have 4G...

Yeah if it's a T-Mobile phone you can just put your SIM card in and it should work. Technically it can still be stolen and blocked from activation, but GSM providers like T-Mobile and AT&T almost never use or check that database so it's not worth your time to worry about that.

T-Mobile has 4G coverage all over the Salt Lake metro area. As I recall he lives somewhere in the Salt Lake valley, so he has 4G coverage.

I hated touch screen keyboards until I got an Evo 4G a couple years ago. You get used to them pretty quick. There are enough in the market now that you'll have no trouble finding one you like. I'm a Swype guy myself.

I can send a 1 handed text with my left hand using Swype, faster than I used to type with either or both hands on any physical phone keyboard.

Trust me, coming form someone who hated touch screen keyboards for years, you'll get used to it within a week. Shortly after that, you'll actually prefer it.

Watch some youtube videos on Swype. It probably looks stupid, like I used to think before I tried it. But once you start using it, you'll never want to go back to a physical keyboard again.

No but seriously, carrying a shopping bag, pulling a suitcase, holding a dog leash, carrying a case of beer, flipping burgers on a grill...

There been been lots of situations where I thought to myself "this keyboard sure is handy" as I sent a one handed text with my off hand.
 
My flip phone is nearing its last days....cracks when I open it, turns off randomly, and can no longer send photos.

So did you make it?

I'm shopping for a new phone. Anyone have any recommendations? Sprint is my carrier.
