The Point Guard Question

If given the choice, what do the Jazz need more at the Point?

This is an interesting topic. I feel the need to say a few things about it. However, This post really only has relevence if the jazz get Golden States draft pick. Yes, this is indeed the truth because even if the jazz pick at 14 in the draft, I do not think Damien Lillard or Kendall Marshall fall that far, especially in a draft so rare in good point guard prospects.

Barring the Jazz do get Golden States pick, who would you rather them choose between Lillard and Marshall. Perhaps this Question could be better asked if stated thus: Will a scoring or passing PG be better for the Jazz future. Lillard is more of a scoring PG (2nd in the nation) and Marshall is an exceptional passing PG (almost 10 assists a game in college).

This question could be answered when looking at the team as presently constituted. Of the four young guys the Jazz are moving forward with, Hayward is the only one that is giving us a pretty accurate assesment as to what he shall become offensively; He has been scoring the B-ball well the last 20 or some odd games. Of course Hayward is older, being 22 while Kanter is just 19, Burks 20, and Favors 20 as well.

I think if Favors gets 30 plus mintues a night, he can give you at least 12 points a game just off his athleticism. I'm high on Burks, and think he'll be able to be a reliable scoring option in 2 to 3 years. Why not say he will one day score 18 a game. Kanter is the biggest Mystery of all our lottery picks. i'm anticipating 15 and 12 in his prime. I think Hayward will be at least a 17 point a game scorer. that is 64 points a game from those 4 (I would not be suprised if each one of them surpasses that. moreover, i didn't want to go over the top with optimism).

With that being said, I think the jazz need Lillard more than Marshall. Lillard shot a very high percentage from 3 point land which is another thing the jazz need. Marshall really just can't shoot as well. Lillard is also a great kid, with great work ethic; he'll be a great addition to the locker room. My choice is officially Lillard

Discuss.

I believe Marshall's passing will prove more elite than Lillard's scoring. Furthermore, it should be easier to add shooters to a team with an elite passing PG than it would be to find an elite passing PG ..

Look at Chris Paul and Deron William you need a PG that people fear first. If we have a slasher then he can draw D and kick the ball to the open people that he helped to get open.

watching lilliard highlights, i've never seen anything that makes me convinced that his scoring ability will translate to the NBA. now, i realize i said the same thing about gordon hayward, so obviously you never know. but i wonder how lilliard would look playing a full season against defenders in the pac-12, let alone NBA defenders.

plus, if favors, hayward and burks continue to improve at scoring the ball, i think having someone who can facilitate is more important than having someone who's going to put his head down on every play and attack.

Marshall is the second coming of Jason Kidd. Elite passer, good size, not the best shooter/scorer, not the fastest guy either. I don't know much about Lillard to be honest, but if you can get Jason Kidd Jr. go with that.

He is the 2nd coming of the 30+ year old version of Kidd, which is still pretty good.

Both stated very well. There's not much I can add to what PKM, and nerd said. Nerd put it best saying we have plenty of scoring. Some things I will add is I'm not a huge fan of college basketball. In the past I only tuned in during the tournament, but this year I really enjoyed watching Marshall. He became my favorite college player, and found time to watch him whenever there was a game on tv. I think he is going to be a great player.

As the year went on I found myself watching other teams and players. I watched a couple Baylor games and watched a ton of Kentucky games, I really enjoyed MKG on that team.

I think Marshall's passing skills are on the level of Stockton, Magic, and Kid. When you have a chance to draft a pg with a skill set like that you don't pass on it. Look at how UNC looked with Marshall was out with injury, really night and day difference. As far as his shooting goes he showed the ability to improve that part of his game. He has great intangibles that will help him translate from College to the NBA.

Agee mostly with this. As far as athletics are concerned everything else is on par with a young Kid except rebounding I can't forget about that. Kid used his speed to get into the paint. Over the course of this year Marshall learned how to use his size and strength to get into the paint.

PKM I want your honest opinion....... How far would have UNC gone in the tournament if they had Marshall the whole time?

I'm honestly torn, and I love Lillard. Even more so now that I know Nerd doesn't .

I want a floor general, and Marshall is that, but Lillard's athletecism, ability to score in multiple ways and with multiple hands is exciting, to go along with his personality.

As far as the "if he was in a real conf" argument, I always counter with "well then he'd also have better teammates, no? He'd also likely not be the SOLE defensive focus of each and every team he plays". See, works both ways.

Say we land Marshall in the draft. What would you all rate the Jazz passing at with Marshall, Burks, Hayward, Millsap and Favors on the floor?

I think it was generally thought that UK and UNC were the clear best two teams. I would say they would have made it to the championship game.

Didn't work for Jimmer that way. He was always the focus of defenses and he had some pretty good teammates.

Jimmer had a much better year, against better competition, and is struggling in the NBA now.

I haven't seen enough of Lillard to have a real opinion though. We'll just have to see how he turns out.
