What's new

John L. Smith is an A-hole.

So John L. calls Arkansas and campaigns for the Razorbacks to bring him over on a 1-year interim basis to replace Bobby Petrino. I don't know what's worse, the fact that he is bolting on Weber State without ever coaching a game, that he initiated all of the talk with Arkansas, or that he's willing to give up the Weber job for an "interim" coaching gig. Either way, what a horrible spot for Weber State to be left in.

A nice use of the spring practice time.

I was never a fan of the hire. I figured he'd be fired after a couple of years. He's all talk and no show. Didn't think he'd be a snake, but now I don't have to suffer through a couple years of the D-bag.

I thought he was a good hire for Weber because I hoped his name recognition would help with recruiting. Looking at the assistants on their staff, Weber seems pretty screwed. There doesn't seem to be alot of experience waiting in the wings. Wonder if Mac would come back for a year.....

So how's this any different than Ronnie McDonny who is now the manager at Snuffleupagus's Web Design after being let go from sub par managerial stints with Oracle and Microsoft, and then a designer spot with Google, finding a way to weasel back into a managerial spot at Google and taking off for greener pastures?

Did Ronnie McDonny sign a work contract saying he'd work at Snuffleupagus for x amount of years?

Of course. He greased Snuffie up with talk about how he loves working for Internet startups....loves the freedom..... and really doesn't like being a company man and yada yada yada. Then he signed his contract, which probably had some penalties included in whatever out clause was in that contract and decided it was worth enacting for the gamble when he saw an opportunity to audition for Google again open up from the Heavens.

Here's an idea for Utah Universities....

STOP. HIRING. MERCENARIES.

Did anyone really expect this guy to stick around? Was he really in for the long haul?

Stop hiring these guys that only want to use you as prostitutes. Hire someone who is truly committed to the school.

Mendenhall, Whittingham, Rose, Anderson, and Merrill are guys that are truly committed to building something.

Meyer and Smith? Nah. Just using us as springboards for the promotion of their careers.

Smith is a Weber State alumnus. They didn't think it was a mercenary hire.

I hated it, and I was proven right.

I did. The dude never ever gave the vibe that he was here for the long haul.

There are some guys that give off that vibe. He was one that certainly did. As did Urban Meyer (but everyone knew that he was damn good and were down with him renting us for a few years before he jumped ship for a better job).

Rose? Whit? Gary Anderson? Nope.

they definitely give off the vibe that they're here for the long haul.

Who gives a rats *** about the idaho universities? Webber boo hoo.

Why do you view Smith as a mercenary hire? He's 60+ years old and didn't live up to expectations in his last two HC gigs. He was the special teams coach at Arkansas. Not exactly Urban Meyer in terms of job progression.

It's only ****ty in that he did it this late. The Cats should promote a coordinator to get through the upcoming season, or hire another old mercenary.

For the most part, I agree with you. However, I think Urban Meyer was the right hire for Utah even if it was a stepping stone job for him. Now that Utah is more established, it's certainly nice to have a "lifer" like Coach Whitt, but the program is better off to this day because of the 2 years Meyer spent there.

Absolutely agree.

I wasn't comparing him exactly to Urban.

I do believe he was a mercenary hire. But more like Josh Howard was to the Jazz rather than Urban was to Utah.

He needed to use Weber St. to get back on his feet. Once he had a good season or two to get back on his feet, he was going to bail. I thought most Wildcat fans knew this.

Obviously, no one expected him to jump ship this fast.....

I think this speaks volumes about how classless the deep south and Arkansas. They ignore for years the horrible person they had as HC (you can't tell me that no one knew about his affairs until he had this motorcycle accident... Not to mention his other questionable things he has done). You'll never convince me that Cam Newton wasn't aware of what his good ol pop was doing. But in the fine Christian south, anything goes!

What an *** move by Arkansas. I hope this next season goes down in flames and Smith's contract is not renewed (wasn't he signed on for only10 months as an intern? Wow... His job is anything but secure). Hopefully Arkansas is caught with illegal recruiting or something and sees their program wiped out into oblivion by the NCAA.

Karma's a bitch

Word is Smith contacted Arkansas, not the other way around. I really harbor no ill will toward the program.
