Possible Hint To KOC's Next Move

Hoopshype is reporting Orlando will indeed be matching the Reddick offer. This puts the Magic waaayyyy into tax territorry. While Gortat is the main back-up for Dwight Howard, he also hardly see's any minutes out on the court. Considering his 8 million dollar salary will be taxed dollar for dollar, you have to wonder if Orlando is basically willing to part with 16 million dollars just to keep him. I don't think it's a stretch to think he'll be available. The Harp trade exception is only 6.5, so maybe somebody smarter than me can tell me how Utah can incorporate that and still make this deal work.

Also, while it seems Raja Bell makes it less likely Ronnie Brewer ends up in Utah, now Chicago is back in the market for an SG and we know what direction Boozer and Korve want them to go. Seems like Brew may have found a new home......

I am a fool when it comes to the cap. If we used the Harpring TPE to acquire Gortat would it mean that the money Gortat is making this coming year wouldn't go against us towards the cap because of the TPE?

Utah Jazz: Bell signing could be last major addition

Kevin O’Connor said Thursday that the broad outline of next season’s roster is likely set after the signing of Raja Bell...With the team’s payroll already in luxury-tax territory, O’Connor said he could continue to spend, but added, “It’s got to be the right player. O’Connor said he would most like to add a shot-blocking big man, though he acknowledged the scarcity of such players."

We aren't taking on 6 million in salary when we are already over the LT line...just not gonna happen.

I don't see the FO taking on any more big deals. I expect they just fill out the roster and go as they are until we see what this group can do, and then go from there.

I disagree, I think Utah would strongly look at Gortat if Orlando becomes interested in moving him. Yes, it puts Utah 6 million more in the tax whole, but Utah would have until the trade deadline to make a salary-dumping trade.

Is it likely? Probably not, but it would be a move they'd have to at least consider.

No. The Harpring TPE only allows us to acquire Gortat without actually having to send contracts back. Thus, his entire salary would count against our Cap and push us 6mil plus into luxury tax territory. In other words, it's highly unrealistic we would do that.

No. it just means we can sign a player for up to that amount and the other team recieves the TPE instead of matching salaries.

So adding Gortat would cost Utah $12.6M. In other words, ain;t gonna happen.

The only move I see is replacing Yada or Price with a better PG.

Gortat is owed $6,322,320.00 in 2010-2011 it should work.
Yep. I checked it with ESPN's Trade Machine, FWIW.

And word is that the Magic plan to match the offer for Redick. That gives them an incentive to do this trade - save tax money by shedding a player with the team's 5th-highest salary but who only plays 12 mins/game. However, we have the same problem - adding Gortat costs double, due to the tax. For this reason I doubt it happens.

would this guy even be worth that kind of money to begin with?

Nope.

Fess is just as good if not better than Gortat.

there are a few players that Jazz fans become obsessed with here. Gortat, Troy Murphy, Jeff Foster, Andrew Bogut, Jason Kapono, and Corey Maggette have all been listed as missing pieces at one time or another on this board for a championship run.

I can't believe you put Bogut on that list. He is arguably the 2nd or 3rd best center in the league. He defends,he is physical, he can score with either hand, he can pass it like crazy, hell he can even dribble. If we got Bogut we would beat the Lakers

Fes > Gortat? I think not.
Fes can be very good in short stints. He's a better space-eater than Gortat, but Gortat is very mobile for a big man. Gortat is a far more disciplined, all-round player; good positional defender, he's 7'0" and uses his length very well, blocks shots, stays in great shape and runs the floor, aggressive yet under-control rebounder, not prone to fouls. Even takes many charges. And, he's even got a jump shot. It would not surprise me if Gortat gets traded; I just hope it's NOT to Miami!!

Exactly, Fess is better at 2 Million than Gortat is at 6 Million. It just comes down to how much playing time we have; and right now its not very much for the Center/PF

Nope.

Fess is just as good if not better than Gortat.

If you honestly believe that, you're basketball IQ has got to be somewhere in the negative range.

Seriously, I'm not trying to insult you personally, but that may be the dumbest statement I've ever seen on this board.

KOC on 700am today said that there will most likely be 4-5 signings, really quick. Then the rest of the summer should be quiet.

Whether thats rounding out the roster with training camp and dleague talent or another FA signing? Who knows.

No doubt KoC will keep his ears open to any possibility of improving the Jazz. With us being in LT-land for the 2nd straight year, I think the Jazz brass feels a greater responsibility to get the good ship Jazz back on course. Are they feelin' the pressure? You betcha...
