So, I seriously do not think that this team will change at all next year. We will have another year of Al leading us to 4th overtime losses, Harris's up and down play, and Favors riding the pine. The reason why? Because, in the summer of 2013, the Jazz will have approx 15 million in contracts. That leaves them with unheard of cap space. My gut feeling is that Utah is hoping to pick up a max player or two that summer. The penalties will be fully kicked in, and it will be much more difficult for big market teams to over pay players.

So, who do the Jazz go after? Their roster will consist of Hayward, Favors, Kanter and Burks.
 
I hope we miss the playoffs so we can get a really good darft pick. This will also apply in perpetuity.

Getting the darft pick is where it's at!
 
summer of '13 needs to be factored into everyones speculations about what the jazz will do this offseason. It's simultaneously true that (a) one of the bigs almost certainly must be dealt (and I don't think they want to part with Millsap, Favors, or Kanter), and (b) we probably don't want to take on any significant salary beyond next year unless it's for a top-flight PG.

Any Al for PG ideas? Any Al for MLE-level salary ideas? Any Al for draft pick ideas (I'm aware PKM is working up something)?

All of this will also have interesting implications for how we fill out the roster next year. Guys like Watson, Tinsely, and (ahem) Bell won't go without some serious thought because they are cheap and have no tie to the team beyond next year. 2 or 3 draft picks would be nice, but it remains to be seen what we can do in this department. At any rate, there will probably be a few one-year vet rentals on the team next year.... which is sure to lead to some serious aggravation.

BTW, we should probably bump GVC's thread about "guards galore" and merge this thread with it.

While I think it is most likely they will look to deal Al or Sap, I also think they're going to have a long think about rolling out the Big Lineup next year. Solves the minutes problem for Favors/Kanter and ensures maximum control over Cap Space. Not sure that lineup will really hold up over 82 games, but it doesn't have to with Al and Sap expiring.

Yeah, I've admitted elsewhere that I wouldn't be surprised to see everybody return, but I really don't think that is the FO's first choice. Al for KMart for one year, then sign a journeyman to be the 4th big... that's preferable, I think.

Martin's an FA but that's beside the point. Problem with Al deals is the salaries. It's hard to make 15 million match without taking on salary that goes into 2013. It gets easier with Sap, but they will have to weigh the value of whatever wing they take back against Sap's ability to play the 3. In a lot of cases, maybe most, you're probably better off with Sap, even if he's not an ideal 3 by any stretch.

Teams over the cap can also take back 150% in the new CBA.

Jefferson is movable. I have this antiquated notion that you keep your best players and move from there. Keep Millsap.
 
For the record, if Kevin Martin isn't being one of the most efficient, productive scorers in the NBA, he isn't giving you much. He was just not very good this last year and I don't think the Rockets want him at all. Is Jefferson for Martin/the lesser of their 1st rounders realistic?

Sure. Rockets definitely need big men. But Morey always dreams bigger. I'd guess they would renew efforts to obtain Gasol and at least make a few phone calls on Howard.

even though Martin struggled this year, I'd take this trade in a second. It creates a logjam at the 2, but I think we could go small and get three guards out there. It makes us better next year + it doesn't handcuff us for the FA bonanza.
 
One last note of import, Houston will be far under the cap this offseason, so they could take back Al while sending minimal salary back.

This is one of the reasons that I love what Hayward can do. He can easily play the SF position in a small ball lineup and because of that it gives you a lot of possibilities as to who you put around him.

If Kevin Martin and a PG was dealt I could see a line up similar to this one:

Houston PG
Martin
Hayward
Millsap
Favors


Dragic or Lowry are respectable enough from the outside that it would really free things up for Millsap and Favors down low. This would make the Jazz better immediately.

I don't see us getting that much from Houston.

I don't think that we will get that much either, but even with Marshall on the floor Martin and Hayward would get some great open looks.
