What's new

Derrick Favors Mix 2011-2012.

I can't remember what exactly lock said, but I remember him saying Hayward had a high turnover rate out of pick n roll.

You're right. I heard the same thing. He TOed the ball 30% of the time, which is quite bad. Interestingly enough, Burks had the best TO% of any of our guards on the P&R. The problem with Hayward is his ability to finish at the rim on P&R's, and thus he has a tendency to force the pass since he prefers to pass or jump into the air before even knowing where he's going to throw the ball since he seems a bit uncomfortable driving the ball in the half-court offense. We've all seen his great passing, but he needs to get comfortable driving the ball and be happy to dribble through like Nash or Paul (or any good PG for that matter), kick it out without jumping in the air, or be able to finish at the rim in the half court offense at a clip above 43-45%. So I agree he has some work to do to be able to run the P&R efficiently.

I was reading a Locke article that said Hayward was terrible in the pick n' roll this year. He had the worse #'s of any pick n roll ball handler on the team.

The pick n roll is a 2 man game. Locke should've posted how well Hayward does with Al setting a pick and compare it to how well he does when Milsap sets a pick.

this.
Hayward NEEDS to add the floater to his arsenal. If he does this + gets consistent from a couple of spots on the three-point line, then it's to the moon.

Hayward's never going to have a floater. We'd have seen at least one by now. What he can do is develop a stop and pop in the lane.

This was among my top two Favor's dunks of the year. He just skys into orbit:

you might end up in a sig later for this.

BTW, Paul Millsap will never be a starting PF in the NBA. Paul Millsap will never be......

I will be kind of surprised if he adds a floater, or at least a good floater, to his game. Most of the guys that I think of off the top of my head who have good floaters are also guys who I would consider to have great layup touch. Hayward has a pretty poor layup touch. Doesn't it mean it can't happen, but I see him just sticking with that pull up jumper he does in the lane.

I'd prefer him to just just keep dunking on people. I loathe players that do what I call "the ***** floater".

Well not everyone can just dunk over everyone, plus it leads to injuries if you are constantly just trying to be a wrecking ball. I think it would be a smart move to try to add it, but I just don't if he has the touch around the rim to do it.

I agree with Cy. Even if you can dunk on people, there is always a time and a place for the floater.

Karl Malone.

Whoever thinks that Karl was a great athlete never watched Karl's game.

Does anyone know why Karl did that ear thing? Was it so the crowd would louden up? Was it showboating? It always seemed like epilepsy to me.

I never thought it had anything to do with his ear. I always thought it was meant to be a variation of something like this:

As for the athleticism comments, I have a feeling I'm defining that a bit differently than some of you. To me Karl was a power player with an incredible work ethic. As time went on he also developed great touch, but that has nothing to do with athleticism either. He was never the most talented athlete in the gym. I think that Blake Griffin (for a power forward example) is a far more gifted athlete than Karl ever was, but I doubt his career is ultimately going to come close to Karl's.

For his size Karl was extraordinarily fast, powerful, and explosive. Griffin can jump higher, but that is seriously the only metric by which he is a "more gifted athlete."

Look up top ten videos of Griffin dunks or Sean Kemp dunks. If you can't see the difference in athleticism between those guys and Karl Malone (beyond just jumping height) then you and I have a completely different definition of athleticism. If Karl ever did a double pump, a spin move or a reverse jam I'm not recalling it at the moment. Even alley-oops were rare and never flashy. The two power forwards I mentioned above routinely did/do those things. They often take the ball the full length of the court, gracefully dribbling through multiple defenders. Karl was a far better basketball player than Kemp, but he never came close to having the same athletic tools. I'll bet that Karl himself would take my side in this argument and I could swear I even recall hearing him say that the reason he posed when he made breakaway dunks was because he couldn't do the crazy things that guys like Shawn Kemp did.

The dunk pose Malone is doing he used to call a "vanity dunk." It used to be one of his things. He did it in the Olympics with the '92 Dream Team.
