Legalize Cannabis

How many actually go to prison?

A friend who works at the prison says there is ONE guy in Utah's prison for marijuana related charges...and it was because he had a whole truck load of the stuff.

I'm a little busy to look up numbers right now. But about 400000 are in prison for drug related charges (out of 1.6 million). A big chunk of that is pot related. It ranges from about 5% to 15% of all prisoners in a given state.

Then your friend is either lying or ignorant.

Follow Siromar's link. There are roughly 45 000 people in state and federal prisons for marijuana related crimes.

Neither is true.

SiroMar says 400,000 and you say 45,000.

So I think the B.S. numbers are coming from the pothead side.

I see the big chunk of 400,000 = 45,000

45000 are in federal prisons for pot charges, 400000 are in both state and federal (most in state) for all drug charges. Do you read anything others post, or do you just type random retorts as fast as you possibly can? O.o

the 45000 is state and federal (not just federal). What isn't accounted for is local and county prisons, which I'd imagine hold a lot of minor drug offenders.

Anyone who thinks driving drunk is similar to driving high is an idiot. Obviously driving when you are extremely stoned is not smart but when you are high, you can actually think compared to when you are drunk.

Think about it normally, who is most likely to get into a fight? shoot someone? break stuff? Someone who is drunk because you can't think when you are drunk. People act like morons, they drunk text people for no reason and do **** they regret the next morning. Not saying being drunk isn't fun but being high is definitely WAY safer. When you are high, it's almost like your instincts and reflexes are still there but sometimes you question yourself. Huge differences.

Question yourself?

You are missing the point. You are still impaired and should not be driving.

I agree but comparing driving drunk to driving high is stupid. Driving tired is probably more dangerous than driving stoned. I'm curious to see what the DUI laws would be and how to determine how high an individual is

Perhaps you are right. However legally I think they should apply the DUI laws to driving high.

yet there are still hundreds of thousands of people in prison who's only offense is possession of marijuana.

It's exaggerations like these that hurt the pothead's case.

There is less than 1,000 prisoners per state for any type of marijuana offense let alone simple possession.

And hundreds (thousands) in jail in every state for marijuana. I don't think he was off at all. I think the only person who was off is the moron who told you only 1 person is in Utah State Prison for marijuana.

As long as we're only putting around 1000 people per state in prison when they absolutely don't deserve to be there I guess I'm okay with it morally. I mean they're only human beings and their freedom isn't that big a deal because there are so few. As long as they arn't having their freedom impacted by paying too many taxes it all evens out in a way. Except for the people who live in prison instead of at home, working, taking care of their families.

Oh, and calling this a pothead vs non-pothead issue hurts your case.
