The Jazz have only one selection in the upcoming draft, a second round pick. Unless they can swing a deal to get into the first round or early second round, the probably won’t significantly upgrade their roster via the draft this season. They could really benefit from finding a point guard this offseason. There has been almost non-stop chatter about Devin Harris getting traded, but they’ve been reluctant to follow through with trading him due to the lack of a starting caliber point guard on the roster to replace him. If they could trade him and his contract, which will be an expiring deal next season, they could get a quality piece in return.

They could also benefit from finding a small forward. Gordon Hayward is a good player, but he lacks the strength and athleticism of many of the small forwards in the NBA. C.J. Miles and Josh Howard are both free agents, meaning they need somebody who can step in and give them some minutes on the wing. They may or may not find that player in the draft at pick 47. It also wouldn’t be a complete surprise to see them draft a foreign big man. Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson both have contracts that expire after next season, so taking a foreign big could allow them to trade one of them or let one of them leave via free agency and still have another power forward or center on the bench without having to have an additional frontcourt player on the roster this season.

Disagree about Gordon not being athletic or strong enough to play the 3. I think Gordon could play the 3 and he sometimes does, but when he plays the 2 he's usually always got the advantage on the other team. He's fast enough laterally that he's able to guard other 2s.
Now there are some times when he's not good at gaurding 2s but that usually happens when a team puts one of its PG in the 2 spot. (Like the Minnesota game)

TL;DR- We need an SF not because Gordon can't play it, but because we'd like to have the advantage at the 2 spot night in night out without sacrificing advantage at the 3 spot.
 
This brings into question another thing: What would you rather have in two years: Gordon starting at the 2 with Burks backing him up OR Gordon starting at the 3 with Burks starting at the 2. I personally choose the second option; get the best players on the floor, and if those two aren't the best players at that point, than we are in trouble.

And yet, Gordon supposedly is a better 2.... Maybe Burks can start at the one???? (wishful thinking)
 
I really don't have any respect for anybody outside of Utah to give an opinion on our team. And I don't think it's because we are a bunch of homers, its becuase they are always talking out their buts.

No one really get's a team or it's players like the people that watch everygame and follow every aspact of the team. Like how Jazzfanz do, or any other fan base. It's really just pointless to read any of the national garbage about any team. That's why I hate people saying things like... Did you hear what Chad Ford said? No, Cuz I really don't care.

This has been a constant thought for me as well. We need both players to get stronger and that could immediately solve the SF problem the team has.

I believe that with added strength Gordy would have the advantage most nights. He will never be at a Durant or LBJ level but he could be solid. His court IQ will really help him. Honestly, I would love to see the offense run through him as a point forward type.

The 2 percentages the kid needs to raise are his confidence and swagger percentages. Then he will reach his potential.

I do not neccesarily agree with that. It depends on how good the other players are. Do not forget Favors (who will be one of our best if not the best player on the team I hope) and Kanter. However I hope that they will indeed be amoung the best. I have very high hopes for The Four.

If Derrick Favors isn't the best player on the Jazz at that point, then they are in trouble.

True that.

If Favors can become our number 1 offensive option then the rest of our pieces make sense. Favors, Hayward and Burks are very good in transition. I think Kanter and Hayward would work best as 3rd or 4th scoring options. Burks I hopes he can develop in a very good scorer in the NBA. He showed a little bit of post game last year. The midpost is where elite wing players make their living. (see Pierce, Lebron, Wade) If you put that together with his slashing ability he could be a very good scorer. Of course if he can make open 3's then he would average close to 20 ppg. Personally I think it is more likely we end up trading one or two our Young Four. But we should wait and see if Favors is an NBA alpha dog.

Ok, my bad

A better way of putting it would have been 'our best wing players'. I'm talking about wing players, not bigs. The bigs are a whole other discussion, and I would agree that if Favors isn't our best post player, then we are in even bigger trouble.

The end question is: who is the core of the team, does it include Burks or does he become a solid backup, and does Hayward and Favors take the reigns of the team? Finally, will Kanter be Al's backup, or does he surpass the 'master' (yikes) and take the team by the horns.

Some good questions. Right now I would say the core is Favors, Hayward, Kanter and Burks. Even if Burks develops into a 6th man I may still consider him part of our core (ex. Ginobli in S.A.). Next year I am specifically looking for Favors and Hayward to step up in a leadership role and make this their team supported by Evans, Kanter, Tinsley, Burks and Carroll.
 
Would love to see the Jazz look like this...

New PG, Watson/Tinsley
Hayward, Burks
Millsap, Carroll, Burks
Favors, Millsap
Kanter, New C

Gives flexibility and versatility with the ability to put the best players on the floor and exploit matchups.

Means Jefferson, Harris, CJ, Bell are gone, and Millsap and Carroll are kept.
