For capologists and NBA experts:

I am just wondering what would have happened if Mo opted out of the player option, does that he'll be a free agent?

If yes, if he is really interested in going back to Utah and Jazz really wants him back, why not go this route and sign him for whatever .. one year 8.5 or multiple years at, i dunno, 5 or 6M per year?

Thanks.

This way the Jazz don't have to bid for his services and they get a 1 year tryout to see if he fits within the offense.

For Mo this way he gets 8.5 million for next year and gets a tryout to show what he is worth. He was not a starter in LA and he was not one of the big name players on that team. For Utah he has a decent shot at starting and even if he doesn't he will have a shot to be a bigger name on this team.

Also he was not going to get 8.5 million next season if he became a FA. Probable a mid level deal is all. He is likely able to get that same deal next offseason so why not take the 8.5 million now and still get a similar deal next offseason?

Well said.

Why does everything have to be long-term? Short term deals can be made that help the team also.

To win in the NBA you have to have the maximum amount talent possible. This is just adding talent, something you have to do if the opportunity is presented.

And short-term is especially good in this case because the Jazz can maintain their cap space for 2013-14.

Yes, solid analysis.
Mo wants to be a starter. And he wants to do that at PG. I'm sure his agent made phone calls to every team to see if there was interest in signing him to a long-term deal. Apparently there wasn't anything enticing. And anything out there was probably not close to $8.5M. If Mo shows he can still be a good PG, he'll get some offers for around the mid-level, perhaps even from Utah.

And with HArris still in place, I doubt Williams would have even considered signing as a FA with Utah. Why would he? He needs minutes at the point in a contract year. I don't know what KOC said to him, but it was probably something along the lines of the roster still being in flux and to trust him.
