Extend Mo?

I know KOC made a subtle comment during Mo's press conference that the goal is to keep him here long term, but he wouldn't extend him now would he? Don't you think he learned his lesson from the Memo extension? I still think KOC's goal would be to get a top young PG here next offseason and have Mo be the backup.

I guess if he extended him for 3 years $12 million I could get on board with that, but KOC can't really think that he's the starting PG of a contender, right? My hope is that he's the stop-gap until we get Curry.

If there's someone on our roster that will be the Jazz's next AK contract, it's going to be Mo.

I would extend him if the price was right (6-8 million a year). There are 0 future PG prospects in the Jazz system and the backups are old with their performance deteriorating by the second.

Mo's currently making $8M. Have you seen the contracts being given to second-tier PG's?
$12M for 3 yrs...you've got to be kidding? Mo will get a contract offer next season and I agree with Jazz4ever, it will probably be in the $6-$8M per year range, depending on what kind of a season he has. Like kOC generally does, I think he'll let Mo and his agent test the waters. According to Mo, it was actually Bartlestein that held up the deal, not Mo, as he wanted to call around the league to see if there were other options.

I predict Mo is going to be here long-term. He'll be a starter for the next 2-3 and then split mins if/when the Jazz acquire a young PG who develops. Took Stockton a couple of years to supplant Green. It's not likely we'll be drafting a Deron at #3 again, so any young PG is going to need some time to learn the offense. Mo will be the perfect mentor.

I assume you're talking about Dragic and Lin who are both younger and are looked at as long-term answers at the starting PG position. Well if Mo is going to be the starter then he'll demand starter $, but for the sake of our team I hope he's not the long-term answer at PG, although would love it if he were the back-up.

Note: I'm totally fine with him being the starting PG this year. Straight up I think Mo vs. Devin is a wash, but given our current team I think having a PG who can shoot the 3-ball is a much better fit.

Other way around, I think. I think Mo gets extended for 3-4 years at $7M - $8M per, and we bring in a young PG to take over sometime during that extension period.

I fear you may be right, but I really hope you're wrong. Mo's good and all, but when you lump him in with other starting PGs around the league he's closer to the bottom than the top, right? Maybe I should hold off judgement for now as he hasn't really been in a position the last few years to lead a team as their starting PG.

So after the big offseason next year, what does everyone see our team looking like? I gotta think that if we want home court in the first round that we need another elite player on this team. As it's looking right now we may have 1 top tier guy in Favors and that's still a big if (although I am confident he'll be awesome)

My ideal scenario would be to either pry away Curry or Harden from their respective teams (there are others I like, but I don't think there's a shot we could get them) and have them start at PG. I know people will kindly tell me that Harden isn't a PG, but I don't care - you get him and Favors running PnR after PnR and nothing else will matter.

So my 2013 ideal roster:

Curry or Harden
Hayward
Marvin
Pau (I said ideal)
Favors

Couple that starting lineup with a deep bench and I think we could get home court in the first round.

Yep. If anything, MO has been too good of a guy. When TJ Ford came back, MO moved over to SG without complaint. When LA Clippers traded for CP3 and Chauncey, Mo did the same. I guarantee you we'll be surprised and pleased to see Mo run the offense. However, we also have to realize we don't have ideal P&R guys right now. Neither Millsap nor Jefferson can run it and Favors is still very raw. So can we expect Mo to have 10 assists per game? Not likely.

But let's not label him a failure if he doesn't reach Deron-like numbers. He's half the price, twice the leader and needs absolutely zero maintenance. I hate to use the words he did, but I abolsutely see him bringing leadership and toughness to the team. We've had threads on here before asking who the team leader is or should be. And I'm not sure there's ever been a good answer. Jazz were so desperate they brought in a bench player (Raja) to try to be that guy. And as crazy as it sounds, perhaps even Howard added some of that last season. Now there's no question Mo will drive the team.

If anything, I think the Jazz would let Mo become a FA, try to make some other impact signings (while having discussions with Mo) and then use Mo's Bird rights to go over the cap rather than use up some of the cap space by extending him.

Solid points guys. I hope I'm not coming across as anti-Mo, I'm genuinely excited to have him and think he's an upgrade at PG.

Mo will turn 30 in December. He's a shooting PG - and those type tends to age quite well (Billups, Nash, Cassell, etc). To me I think he can play well into his 30's as long as he keeps hitting those mid range shots & 3's. He also has quite a few kids to think about when considering contract extensions (not sure if totally relevant!!!!).

So I think Mo will be looking at least around $7m per year as a minimum, and at least a 4 year deal IMO.

Will he be worth it at that price? I'm glad I don't have to make that call... LOL

I hope we don't extend Mo. I consider him nothing more than a slight upgrade over Harris - Still a stopgap PG, just a slightly better one. (hopefully)

I think we'll need to draft our PG. Getting one by trade or FA is very difficult. Just keep drafting PGs and recycling stopgap vets until the fit is right.

If he's good, I think he's definitely worth it. Plus, that lets our long-term answer at PG unfold a little more naturally. We don't have to reach in a draft, overspend in FA, etc.

I'm hoping that we trade up in a draft 3/4 years from now to draft Mo's replacement, let Mo groom him for a season or two while his contract expires, and let the young gun take the reigns with a little bit of seasoning.

So you don't think the Jazz can entice CP3 to leave LA for SLC next year?

We should have a lot of cap space next summer when there are some good young PG's entering free agency (Lawson, Holiday, Curry etc.), so I wouldn't want to extend him, if we think we've got a shot at one of those guys. However, if we draft a PG with the GS pick like Myck Kabongo or BJ Young, then I'd want to extend Mo and have the rookie come off the bench his first two seasons. We have a lot of options coming our way, so it's too early to say if we should extend Mo. It's certainly a possibility, though.

I would love to get Ty Lawson, but I suspect he'll get and accept a generous extension from the Nuggets this summer. I like Jrue Holiday and Curry, but I'm sure the Jazz wouldn't go after Curry unless he stays healthy this year. But as you say, there are a lot of options for a future PG. Hopefully whatever the Jazz go leads to title contention.

It's too early to tell. We have to see a game first. We don't know if we are going to like what we get or not. We have to see how he plays with the other players.

Pre-mature threadulation.

Squirt!!
