"Another source told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram the Big Eight also has targeted for expansion Brigham Young and New Mexico of the Western Athletic Conference. Such additions would link 14 schools from nine contiguous states that stretch from Texas to Iowa and from Utah to Missouri. 'One step at a time,' cautioned Colorado Chancellor and Big Eight chairman James Corbridge, who is overseeing the addition the Texas schools. But, he said, 'In this environment, you can't wait around until everything falls into place.'"

"Brigham Young University officials have talked with the Southwest and Big 8 conferences about the possibility of leaving the Western Athletic Conference, according to a published report. BYU Vice President R. J. Snow told the Houston Chronicle his school had preliminary discussions with SWC and Big 8 officials. The discussions were sparked by the Southeastern Conference's defection from the College Football Association television package for a deal with CBS."
