Lin surprised and disappointed?

The nice part is that at the end of 4 years Lawson and Ibaka can get a nice raise, but after being underpaid for up to 4 years the RFA's have no loyalty and look to sign the biggest deal out there. The worst part is that at the end of the rookie deal the Kanter, Darko, Thabeet crowd get QO of 8 million per year, ouch. Well if the Minnywolfs like Wes Johnson and want to keep him as a 8th or 9th man, they have to renounce their RFA rights and then try to persuade him to stay at a reasonable price. 4years and 25 million wasted.

I must admit it keeps the rookies and their agents from holding out from teams and forcing gross contracts, but I want a way to reward the contributors and not punish teams that make mistakes in the lottery.

There are definitely the positives and negatives, but at the end of the day I think it does more good than bad because the first-round picks only get two years of guaranteed money.

Uh, Whiteside makes/made less than a million per year and Darko's not on his rookie contract.

I think his agent was set on "testing the market." I'm sure he expected Utah to match any reasonable offer, but I doubt when he signed his contract he really expected the Jazz to match. He even sounded a bit embarassed in his Portland press conference over how much he was making. Tough to leave, yes, but when a contract is that high, you take it.

On the other hand, the information on Houston's offer to Lin was out way before it could even be signed. Much like Hibbert did, Lin could have negotiated a deal with New York before the offer sheet with Houston was officially signed. But he and his agent didn't. They forged ahead with the poisin pill structure. So he has only himself and his agent to blame (or thank) for getting $25M but having to play in Houston - if that's what happens.

Even if Lin ends up playing for Houston and is disappointed about not going back to the Knicks, I'm sure he'll be all right in Houston. I would hate to think that someone who went to Harvard would be dumb enough to sign an offer sheet with a team in a location that he hated or strongly disliked.

The NBA's contract structure for rookies is the envy of the professional sports world. Find something (probably about one hundred) worse things to complain about.

Almost makes you wonder if Lin is saying that right things, but secretly wants to go to Houston. After all, he wouldn't have Melo taking away from his touches.

Actually I'm beginning to full on wonder...
