No BYU-Utah Rivalry Football Games in 2014 or 2015

I am sure I am in the minority of BYU fans here, but I actually like independence for the simple reason that we get to play bunch of random teams and mix it up a little bit. I know we would be middle of the pack in the big 12 and that would kind of suck ***. I'm a realist.

Yeah we wouldn't want to go all "BYU fan" on you guys when we start bringing up national championships in basketball that happened before most of us were born.

Honest question, not trying to pick a fight or argue..... What year did utah win a national championship in basketball?

Swing and a miss as usual. Not even remotely close to the same thing.

Which is what I have been saying for the last 5 pages.

Laughable. This is like asking a 6th grader to give a review of War and Peace. JM12 brought it, you just rode in on his coat tails -- GASP -- such a Utah thing to do.

Thanks, i had no idea. Nice to know.

I honestly didn't know until a couple years ago either. Same with 84'. Had no idea until probly 5 years ago.

I'm happy to have been born right before Mcbride took over and turned the rivalry back around for good.

Wow, hadn't visited this thread in a while.

Very entertaining.

Pretty much the usual clap-trap, but one thing caught my attention:

Riley Nelson is light years ahead of Wynn.

I'm not a big fan of Wynn, but that's beyond ridiculous. Given the opportunity to swap Wynn and Nelson, straight across, I would say "no thanks" 100 times out of 100. Even with Wynn's injury history.

typical slobbering drunk utah fan response. "ya, you just laid down a mountain of smack that hit so hard it shook my nuts like dice in a yahtzee cup, so i'll just play it off like none of that matters, lol!!11 ooooh, i think i'll emphasize it with some swears!!!1 ***** you **** head ****ers!" /thumbs up.

**** you you ****ing **** sucking ****ity ****er!!!!

My QB sucks less than yours!!!

I guess that's kinda what it comes down to, but even if it's a wash (comparison is tricky, as their skill sets are quite different), the proclamation that Nelson is markedly better than Wynn is pretty amusing.

But from The Thriller, I would expect no less.

I think Nelson being more of a gamer and more durable puts him above Wynn but not by much. But I would never say Nelson is way better than Wynn. They are both 10th tier college QBs.

100 times out of 100 for a QB that's constantly hurt, has had 2 or 3 good games his entire career, might have a worse arm than nelson, and cant run? Seems a bit irrational. Maybe like 20 times out of 100 you would take Nelson.

I actually hate Nelson with more passion and fervor than is probably healthy, and I'd still take him over Wynn. Wynn is the only reason I'm betting on BYU to win this year -- he's THAT bad. If he gets injured, I might have to withdraw my bets.

Maybe 10 times out of 100. But he would need to keep that haircut in check. I don't want him pissing off Jesus and causing us a loss.

Conan's right, Nelson is more of a gamer and tougher than Wynn. There's actually parts of Wynn's game that I think are merely "ok", but I don't spend a ton of time worrying about it because this guy is Utah's version of Chad Pennington. You know the next good hit he takes, one of those shoulders is blowing up again. However, unlike the past, this time Utah has guys like Travis Wilson/Chase Hansen who can take the field and never give the starting job up.

I think Riley Nelson will continue to look good against teams who don't have good athletes on defense. Utah's D is the perfect example of what Riley is going to struggle with:

-A unit with a strong defensive line that can pressure the QB up the middle, thus negating many of the rushing lanes Riley tends to want to take when the pocket breaks down.

-A defensive backfield that plays man coverage almost all the time, allowing Utah to put more players in the box to account for Riley's running ability.

-Athletes across the board on defense that will be able to contend with Riley's athleticism.

It must be maddening for the Cougar fan with good football IQ (all 12 of them). Riley will look like a Heisman candidate against half the schedule and they'll have to hear uneducated Cougar fan go on and on about how he was the right choice over Jake Heaps, what a great/gritty player he is, etc. Meanwhile, against the teams with better talent, he's most likely going to struggle. Just my opinion, but if you're talented enough to contend with his ability to improvise, you've pretty much contained 90% of his game.

Personally i thought it was a bad move to go with riley over heaps even though riley might have been the better qb last year. Our best players were all very young last year (hoffman, apo, van noy) so i would have preferred to stick with heaps and let him struggle with the hopes that he would get better and better and then when he and the other good young players all were seniors maybe byu could do something special like utah in 04, 08. Instead we sacrificed that hope for an awesome future so that we can be average now.

As far as wynn versus riley.... thats a tough one, they both suck but i would take rileys leadership and toughness over wynn. I think both team have better qbs backing up the starters.
