Romney is campaigning in coal country

Let's discuss this one...

A private-sector agreement could help India avert future power outages by importing 9 million tons of coal a year from Kentucky and West Virginia.

Gov. Steve Beshear announced the 25-year, $7 billion agreement between India's Abhijeet Group and Kentucky-based Booth Energy Group and River Trading Co., calling it good news for U.S. coal miners who have lost their jobs because of a decline in domestic coal sales.

...

Kentucky coal producers have been searching for foreign customers as the U.S. slowly moves away from coal-fired generating plants.

So a few thoughts...

- So now, we don't really care about solving 'global warming', just outsourcing who contributes to it? Oh, and how will the coal be traveling to India, Hybrid Tanker?

- Since the above (Democrats don't care about global warming) is true, why exactly are we helping build industrial superpowers overseas? You know, the kind that thrive on cheap energy? You know, the kind we have right here that we are going to load on to diesel engines, ship to the coast, load on to tankers that both spew carbon and are a threat to sink and spill their coal in to the ocean's ecosystem?

I vote we add this discussion to some discussion about China.

How about Biden's comments?

I mean, I hate what Wall Street has done and think many more should have gone to jail, but 'Wall Street' has no power to put people 'in chains.' You enter into relations with them voluntarily through loans/CC's/mortgages you can't afford etc.

I'm not aware of Biden's comments, but I will say that every person who fell prey to a loan didn't enter into relations with the lender "voluntarily". There were plenty of desperate situations to go along with those that knowingly gambled and over-mortgaged themselves.

Besides, the whole financial deregulation thing is/was a ****ing mess.... which is another reason to back off the "personal responsibility" slogan.

G: I was just referring to this example. I calls em like I sees em.

P: I've said my piece, no need to spend the rest of the day expanding the discussion into wherever you are trying to take it.

None of you have pointed out anything I said that was not true, except I admit I am not going to get into it about PKM's false assertion that Wall Street has no power except for what people voluntarily give it, or the implication that this would absolve Wall St even if it were true. Do you really want Wall Street to put the American people ( or the world's people) in chains, voluntarily or not?

There are people who blame Obama for lost jobs in the coal industry, thinking that jobs are being lost because Obama is stopping the extraction of oil, nat gas , and coal. The truth is exactly the opposite, which is that there has been so much oil, nat gas, and coal extracted in the US, that there is a glut of product, and prices have plummeted, and this is why the coal industry is hurting now..

I am very interested in this. It sounds like you've read a lot into this & have much to offer. What sources have been telling you they are shuttering coal-based power production because nat gas production is cheaper? I actually have seen one instance of this in Utah, for a very short time, but nothing widespread. Are you sure this doesn't have more to do with marginal demand fluctuations & lower met coal consumption in China? For a while there, met was fetching a hefty price & the Australian mines were raking it in. Does this figure into your analysis? What are you using as baseline?

Allow me to answer for northeast;

- Stop derailing the thread. You know what you're trying to do!!
- You cannot even answer a simple question, so why should I answer yours?
- Democrats have tried to do good stuff with foreign countries and natural resources while everyone knows Republicans have been doing the bad stuff.

What's annoying about you is that you see this as a battle of good vs. evil. As though Republicans just want to hurt people and be mean while Democrats just want to help make the world a better place. It is equally annoying dealing with your Republican doppelgangers.

Anyway, it looks like I've neg repped you recently so I can't on this post. Maybe soon... I think calling someone an idiot like you have is uncalled for.

The best part is that Northeast cries about name calling all the time and is one of the worst offenders.

I really do wonder who Northeast is.

Gameface neg reps me often, and usually includes horrible insults with them.

Idiots. Hypocrites. Deceivers. Gamefaces.

Are you going to provide answers or just name call and finger point at the right?

So is that a no, northeast? Let me guess, you're waiting for Thriller to get here, say a bunch of nonsense, and you'll be like, "Yeah! that's what I was about to say!!"

The partisan crap will never be dropped.

It's as simple as this....
When it comes to making decisions for America, JUST READ THE CONSTITUTION.

Not to mention the benefits of diversity & that you store coal in large piles instead of relying on upstream delivery that can be interrupted for long periods of time.

You'll love this one from Chicago. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rel...-are-diverse-and-wide-reaching-165299026.html

Chicago Clean Energy, a $3 billion state-of-the-art gasification project proposed for Chicago's Southeast Side, will provide a huge economic boom for Illinois, creating jobs and making strides and advancements in energy technology. Senate Bill 3766, which will allow the project to advance, currently sits on Governor Quinn's desk awaiting his approval. The Governor has until August 10 to take action.

The Chicago Clean Energy project is expected to create more than $10 billion in economic output for Illinois and an estimated $1.25 billion in added state and local tax revenue. This includes more than 1,100 construction jobs over three years, 200 permanent, high-paying jobs on-site, more than 150 coal-related jobs downstate, generating more than 700 jobs in related businesses.

Illinois consumers will experience significant benefits from the project. It will offer unmatched protections to consumers, including a guaranteed $100 million in savings over the life of the project for ratepayers and an innovative revenue sharing system that will provide additional cost savings to consumers. State law also includes a 2 percent annual rate cap to protect against any rate increase – the same structure that governs wind and solar projects in the state – and a $1.5 billion consumer protection reserve account that were both added as a result of feedback from Governor Quinn and consumer advocates.

"The Chicago Clean Energy project is a win-win for our community," said Sandra Patterson, president of the Cottage Grove Heights Community Coalition. "This major investment will clean up a contaminated area, create jobs and bring a cutting-edge, environmentally advanced energy technology right to our backyard. I fully support the Chicago Clean Energy project and hope Governor Quinn will too."

Chicago Clean Energy will pursue one of the most stringent air permits ever issued for an energy facility and will enable the clean-up of an existing 140-acre brownfield site, pending approval of the Senate Bill now before Governor Quinn.

What does Democratic Governor Quinn say about investing $3bln immediately, guaranteeing energy savings, creating badly needed construction jobs for the next few years and high paying jobs long term, while cleaning up a contaminated brownfield site? Veto.

After repeatedly earning strong, bi-partisan support for this project from the Illinois House and Senate, and having enjoyed support from communities throughout Illinois, we are deeply disappointed in the governor’s decision to veto SB 3766. We know that this $3 billion investment in Illinois was going to be good for the state’s economy, its environment, its workers and its consumers. While we find the governor's decision unfortunate, we will not seek to override the veto, and we look forward to continuing our work at our other facilities throughout the country.
