Notre Dame to the ACC

Point of clarification: All sports except 1/2 the football schedule.

Notre Dame is agreeing to have 5 of their football games against ACC opponents.

Interesting move. One, they're getting away from a sinking ship in the Big East in the other sports. Two, they've now got one foot in independence and one foot in a conference for football.

Seems like a pretty good move on Notre Dame's part. What do you guys think?

Other than ACC football totally sucks..

I don't know, really, have to think about it. At first blush it seems kind of lateral.

You know things are changing in college sports when even the fiercely independent Notre Dame football team enters an agreement like this. Maybe they see this as a trial run for possibly joining the ACC in football in a few years.

Interesting.

In his opening comments today, Colin Cowherd raised the question as to how this would affect the other non-military independent, BYU. This is what he said:

BYU went independent two years ago and now they are invisible. Utah joined the PAC 12, and they are on TV and I watch them.

This was said by an ESPN employee. On ESPN radio. Wow.

I'd call Cowherd's statement about BYU being invisible pretty wrong. They broke into the Top 25 after beating Washington State and Weber State. An invisible school would beat better teams and not be ranked.

And you know what, Colin knows that the BYU fanbase is vocal and pretty defensive. He may have said that to instigate discussion and activity on his show.

I would agree. I don't think they're invisible. I just find it so funny that an ESPN employee would say that about a team that considers ESPN their television home.

The benefit for the ACC is Notre Dame has name value and ND will be playing 5 ACC teams a year in football as well. If I were guessing the ACC is thinking with the other sports already committed if ND ever does decide to join a conference in football they have a leg up in getting them. ND gets to move their basketball and other sports to a more stable conference and one that is better in basketball now than the Big East.

I was having a conversation with a guy the other day and he said he thought Notre Dame would join the big ten soon. Smarty pants UGLI baby said, "nah if they go anywhere it'll be the ACC, so they can still be the big boy at the table." Holleratchaboi.

Good work UGLI.

Ya, that guy won't soon forget the day he met ol' UGLI. He was the bartender at a wedding I attended, and a Colorado St fan. CSU still exists, apparently.

Btw, jury is still out on the wisdom of befriending the bartender at a wedding, but Orange prolly knows all about that...
