What's new

Veteran forward Trey Gilder is expected to compete for a roster spot during the Jazz's upcoming trai

Can't imagine another big making the roster, or that the Jazz will fill up Roger's spot when they gloriously get rid of him.

Anybody know anything about this guy? I mean, he's made an nba roster, so he doesn't suck completely, and he may even have something, but the Jazz have 14 pretty solid players on their roster, so how does he fit on a team that that almost never holds 15? And why is this news worthy, they are going to have like 18 players on the training camp roster.

How long have you been following the NBA? Every year the Jazz invite a bunch of players to camp, 1 in 30 of those guys will ever make the team (think Andre Owens or Roger Powell.) 1 in 100 will actually play any minutes (think Wesley Matthews, but Wesley Matthews is more like 1 in 1000.)

Trey Gilder tried out for the team last year, he made the news and there were articles that said the Jazz liked him. But in the end, just like this year, it wasn't really news.

I used to get excited over these guys. Two years in a row I thought Rick Hughes was gonna be the next Jeff Hornacek if he was only given the chance (afterall, he lead the world in points per game in 1998 https://enquirer.com/editions/1999/10/17/spt_hughes_in_nba_camp.html )

It's not worth it to get excited over them. Most of them will never see the NBA.

P.S. Since when do you call a guy that has played in 2 NBA games (for a total of 5 minutes) a "veteran"?

I take it back. Troy Hudson tried out for the Jazz two years in a row and couldn't beat out Jacque Vaughn. I think 2 years later he was an all-star (or close to it).

He was one of 17 players in camp in December. He, Scotty Hudson, and a dude from Chicago got axed. That guy played for the Stampede and Gilder played for Sioux Falls in the DLeague.

So, did you read my whole post? With phrases like 'why is this news' and 'the jazz will have like 18 players'? Does it sound like i'm excited? Does it sound like i didn't know that they'd have so many players that he wouldn't see the light of day? The point of my post was to figure out why the newspaper found this interesting to write an article about.

I think what this means is Cousins is definitely coming to Utah. We're losing Kanter and Jefferson, which will open a roster spot. That also means Favors needs to slide over to the 5 when Cousins is out and the Jazz need another PF behind Millsap.
