I agree with you. I do think it is in the best interest of the child to be vaccinated. That is why my children are. However, I am not willing to go and tell other parents exactly how they have to raise their children. Nor will I allow them to tell me how to raise mine. Yes there are exceptions to that but we keep adding more and more rules that we have to follow. Soon we wont be able to decide anything for our child on our own.
I want people and government to stay out of my home. As such I, and government, should stay out of theirs.
Do you have a list of countries handy which use private education more extensively and are superior educationally? Or, was that snark just ignorant snark?

But where do you start drawing the line to protect children from irresponsible adults? Even dogs have laws protecting them against harmful human behavior, and they are far less important to society than children. A line has to be drawn somewhere, and I think this is a perfectly justifiable line considering the enormous harm (beyond the household in particular) that diseases can cause if left unchecked.
I think the idea of "it's my kid, let me do whatever I want" is a really poor policy. There are plenty of ways to express that, but a parent having a kid just so they can punch it in the face when they get angry is really stupid. Nothing is protecting terrible parents from having kids and turning them into terrible people. At least give a defenseless child as much protection as possible.
I agree unluckyseventeen that it is a slippery slope. I just think that forcing immunizations is to far. I think to an extent "it's my kid let me do what I want" is the right policy. We both agree that there needs to be some protaction for children.
I see it as a scale with "my children are my property" on one end and "my children are a trust placed upon me" on the other. Where you fall on that scale determines how mcu you support things like forced vaccination.
Why is that the right policy? What is it about your DNA contribution that gives you the right to such power over another human being. If we are to accept Gameface's approach of rights that come with responsibilities, then the parents must be held accountable for their decisions. If a parent decides to forgo immunization, and the child is harmed or worse by the decision (some diseases are pretty much impossible to get once vaccinated against), then the parent must be held responsible. This notion that a parent somehow owns a child until they are old enough to escape is patently absurd.
I firmly believe that I know what is best for my child over society. I also believe that it is not societies place to tell us how we have to do everything. Basically you are arguing that Society should be able to tell me how to raise my kids.
I agree that certain points need to be regulated. Abuse, nutrition (as far as feeding your kids), education (home schooled, private or public).
But I am not willing to accept that I have the "right" to tell you what you can and cannot do with any kids you have on every issue.
So some kid get the measles because his/her parents chose not to immunize him/her, he gives your kid the measles and it kills them.

Belief has nothing to do with anything. When dealing with the child's health, you simply have no right to decide on your own without the possibility of repercussions. If you refuse to give your child a blood transfusion, and the child dies, then you should be charged with killing the child. I don't give a rat's *** about anyone's beliefs. If your action harms someone, then you should be held responsible. Similarly, if a doctor gives a child a vaccine that somehow harms them, then the doctor should be held responsible.
Throwing rocks at people *is* illegal. And you say my analogies are bad...
If it is illegal is it enforced? I haven't heard of any kids getting busted for throwng rocks...
So do you want a bunch of laws that we do not enforce?
I do not like you belief in that so you can shut up and do what you're told. How's that feel?
Also don't bring up that blood transfusion crap. It is already covered ground. if you want my response to that then go read it.
My using a bad analagoy (about an unenforced law) does not change the fact that the analogy you used was bad.

I gave blood transfusions as an example of people who endanger their children's lives because of their beliefs. They have no right of doing that. Not because it is "extreme". But because you directly inflicted serious harm on another person (not you personally, obviously). The fact that you believe your actions were beneficial is pretty much meaningless next to the fact that they weren't. Belief applies to one's own person, and it cannot be used to justify harming another. I don't understand what you find so radical about what I'm saying.
It's hard to tell. A lot of regulars haven't weighed in. I'm still not sure where I sit on forced vaccinatons.
