This is the first time I've posted on here because I never really had a reason to... until now. I was able to sit a few rows behind the Jazz bench for the 2nd half tonight (much weaker crowd than at Staples on Saturday) and really got a chance to see how the players looked up close and how they acted in and out of TOs and on the bench.
Kanter/Al - It really can't be understated how much Al is doing/pulling for Kanter to develop. He made it a point to put his arm around Kanter to pump him up/give him pointers during every huddle and was really getting into it on the bench when Kanter strung together a great series of plays. It is great to see Kanter run the floor and climb the ladder for rebounds while still retaining his strength in the post. He got pushed around a bit on D at times, but was able to do what ever he wanted in the post for the most part (Al went crazy on the bench when he did the triple hesitation move, pump faking two Laker defenders into the air in the process). Al was still has some sticky *** hands, and his jump shot was just as short in warmups as it was during the game. It was good to see him get a few baskets around the hoop in the 3rd and then start to work his way back out.
Marvin/Gordon - Really worked well together, the Jazz are finally long and interchangeable on the perimeter. Both were able to do a decent job defending Kobe, possibly bothering him to the point where he got pissed off and went into EFF YOU mode and started doing Kobe things). Neither afraid to take the ball to the basket and all of there threes were quality looks.
Millsap - Typical game from him, improved ball skills nothing else much to take away from a preseason game.
Carroll/Burks - My two favorite players to watch while being that close. They both got to the basket with ease and played like it was game 40 in the regular season instead of game 4 of the preseason. You can tell they are really battling for minutes, and both were IMPRESSIVE AS HELL. I love the approach Burks takes to the game. He wants to dominate, but knows that his time is coming and plays as within himself as he can. Carroll left me feeling like the Jazz will have a top 3 bench in the NBA.
Murphy can stroke it, he looked like a natural out there. Tinsley ran the offense well but I held my breath every time he shot. Nash would have killed him if he was on the court for 30 minutes, but considering his shot was falling and Nash was MIA he played very well and left me feeling great about our depth in the back court. Watson sat at the end of the bench, wasn't as invested as I would have imagined he would be.
Favors - Makes the court seem so small when you watch him up close, you watch him and salivate at the possibilities down the road. A few great moves by the basket, an improved stroke at the line and the ability to close excellently on D. However I was way more impressed by Kanter than Favors, something just isn't clicking with him. I wish he would play as himself in NBA2K and realize how effective he could be as a P/R player instead of a back to the basket type guy.
Foye - Spot up shooter that doesn't look all that comfortable/in control with the ball in his hands. Went with a buddy who is a Clipper fan, noted that we were using him wrong. You can tell he is going to be very very streaky, but I would say he has the capability of being a poor man's Eric's Gordon for us, which I will take 10/10 over CJ.
Corbin impressed me in the huddles and on the sideline. Overall came out very excited about the team, even though I have only seen the last two preseason games against a thin shell of the lakers. Real tempted to drive to Vegas and drop some serious coinage on the over at 43.
