Hayward - can he shoot ?

I love absolutely everything about Hayward's game except his extreme inconsistency in shooting.

It seemed as though when Ty had him run the 2nd unit for a few games, taking a lot of shots, most that he normally wouldn't take, he did OK. (About 50%)

But as a 3rd/4th option his shooting is horrible. To the point I wonder how he got this far.

He seems to do better with Tinsley at point for some reason.

Anyway, I am just perplexed on what he will turn out to be ........

I hope the kid turns it around

His balance sucks. You can tell when he drives too, he just doesn't have the best body control.

This. When he is on balance and with his feet set he is a pretty good shooter. He struggles with his footwork coming off screens and when a pass is poorly thrown. IMO fixing these problems would make him an average NBA shooter. But with the rest of his all around game would make him a pretty good player.

Can he shoot, or can he shoot well? He can be an ok shooter, never going to be a Korver but he should be a good enough shooter to keep defenses honest. I prefer him driving anyways, as long as he can be consistent enough to make the D get up on him he will be ok.

I love Hayward's defense, passing and overall basketball IQ, but I have accepted the fact that he will never be a great shooter. He may get hot at times (and occasionally hit a game winning shot like the Sacramento game), but he'll never be dependable/consistent go to guy.

Hayward has wildly inconsistent mechanics on his jump shot. He often does not jump straight up and down, when he shoots from the corner he always seems to be leaning towards the baseline. All bad habits that makes your shots sail instead of go straight.

Personally, I blame Jeff Hornacek. These are all things Hornacek did as a player but he made them more than he missed because he was a natural pure shooter.

I sometimes wonder if Horny was too unique a shooter for him to convey it properly to his players - kind of like Jimi Hendrix trying to teach someone to play the guitar.

Right now, I would take Kirilenkoesque consistency when it comes to CJ Hayward's shooting.

These. He leans back far too often on catch and shoots like he's trying to copy something from Dirk Nowitski's one footed shot. Predicting his misses from his posture is quite easy -- they hit the rim short in proportion to how far back he leans.

IMO Everything points to him being better as a starter (or a 2nd/3rd option)

Starting
13.3 ppg (45%, 32%, 80%)
3.3 reb
2.1 ast

Bench
13.0 ppg (33%, 19%, 90%)
2.4 reb
2.0 ast
