Big Al Trade Idea

A lot of us want Big Al to be traded. But to where, and for whom? Have no fear, I have found a viable trade--not a perfect trade, but a decent enough one to pull the trigger:

Big Al + Randy Foye + Raja Bell to the Charlotte Bobcats for

BJ Mullens + Ben Gordon + Diop (works in ESPN Trade Machine)

Mullens is only 23 and has potential to become a Memo-like stretch 4 who can rebound, but more athletic and taller than Memo. And a stretch 4 would open things up for Favors and Kanter (once they learn to pass out of the post).

Foye and Gordon are basically the same player (and even the same age), but we need to Gordon's contract to make it work (and he only has 2 years left).

Diop is just filler who could provide a few minutes of decent defensive relief.

This trade is more about getting rid of Big Al and his lack of defense/ball-stopping play, and giving the reins to Favors and Kanter, than it is about getting something amazing back (and I'm assuming the Bobcats won't give up Kemba Walker). Start Favors and Millsap, make Kanter the 1st big off the bench, and give Mullens 10-15 minutes.

Also, I like Mo, but with Big Al gone, I'm assuming the flex is going to work better with more&better ball-movement, and more PnRs as well, which Mo doesn't excel at. I'd love to trade him for Jeremy Lin, who is more of a north-south player and plays the PnR much better (not to mention he's younger and is still developing). He's not the shooter that Mo is, but that's ok; we need a better distributer from the PG position (though Mo has been distributing pretty well so far). But the biggest urgency is to get rid of Big Al, give Favors and Kanter the reins (and give Burks more minutes), improve the ball passing and defense.

Thoughts?

Oh, and a 1st round draft pick from the Bobcats, since we're giving up more talent and experience. I think the Bobcats will bite--they need veteran experience, a scorer in the post, and they're super desperate right now with their losing streak. I bet MJ is biting to make a trade.

The Bobcats will give us a good young player for an unrestricted free agent? We would need to throw in a first rounder

Yea, that's the dilemma that faces any team with unrestricted free agents, since a team can just sign them in the off-season without giving up a player. That's why I think the Bobcats have all the ingredients to make them a willing trade partner in that scenario: they're a bottom-tier team mired in a 15 game-losing streak, the FO (from MJ's facial expressions and sitting near the bench to inspire the players) seems frustrated, so they might be willing to pull the trigger now, especially for a veteran inside scorer, which they sorely lack. Plus they can shed a 2-year contract (Gordon) for a 1-year expiring contract (Foye). And they have tons of other young players that they can develop and surround Big Al with. I think it's a win-win for both. I would love to pry Walker or Sessions, but I don't think the Bobcats are stupid enough to let either of them go.

Solution to solve a logjam at the bigs rotation: turn one big into two.

Awesome.

I'm not sure which thread to post this in, but I feel overwhelmed with the need to say that BIG AL ****ING SUCKS AND I CAN'T BELIEVE MY OWN PATIENCE WITH THIS TEAM FOR KEEPING HIS LOSER-TO-THE-CORE *** AROUND.

I like this trade but we should be getting the Detroit pick that was given to Charlotte for taking on Gordon. Also... Wow, someone said "RAD"... haven't heard that in so long.

Oh didn't know about that Detroit pick, yeah throw that in, that pick will definitely be lottery and probably top 6. Rad.

Rich Cho - their GM - used to work with Sam Presti. Cho's strategy for the Cats is the exact replica to OKC strategy.

So I'd be surprised if the Cats give up a young talent in Mullens for an expiring Big Al.

According to the author, this is why. I agree with the author; he makes a really great point about showcasing both Big Al and Millsap and the inevitable trade of one or the other. It should be Big Al. Millsap's passing, hustle, improving outside shooting, and somewhat passable defense makes him a better complementary player for the future core of Favors/Kanter/Hayward (and maybe Burks if the FO wakes the F up).

Trade him? I hear KOC is working on a 6 yr/$100M deal to make sure he retires a Jazzman.

How much is that per year?
Are you sure it's not a 7 yr deal?
Does this mean Corbin is going away from his various experiments and back to Jefferball?

Jazz would be better off just letting Al expire than take on Ben Gordon's 12 million this year and his 13 million next year.
