What's new

Is it really that important?!?

What does it take to be a star? Is it fame? Is it production? Al can average 20 and 10, he's done it before, is he a star? Millsap can too. Any player can if he hogs the ball and throws up a ton of shots.

I would say that a star is a player who can play many different ways from many different angles and dominates while still keeping his team involved. (Hayward?)

ill agree with that. i think hayward can be the big deal on the team, the game changer. i hate to say it but chris paul can have a huge impact on a team with out being the scorer or the rebounder, even on bad assit nights he leads his team. jazz dont need a star the need a leader. not 3 co capitans.. they need one defined real leader

A star is a player you give the ball in the last 2 minutes of every game and he gets it done almost every time. There arent many of those around.

A star is someone no one can stop individually, or someone who makes their teammates exponentially better. We don't have close to that yet. I think Favors can be a defensive star, but I don't see any offensive stars on our team. If you have a team of guys who are all offensively efficient and a defensive star though, I think that may be good enough.

do we have a player that can become the star? do we need to go buy one?

discuss?

Dwight Howard is a star, the Jazz don't need a star as much as they need a leader. To me a star lives in the lights of the media, makes headlines for himself, and is more concerned with his image than winning. The NBA has too many 'stars'.

If the jazz had a leader, a guy who was willing to tell his teamates to step up, inspire others to be their best, and hold them accountable when they are not. Jazz need a leader who is willing to pass or to take take the big shot at teh end of the game, a guy who will tell the media that the loss was his fault.

Not neccessarily this (though it helps)

This is correct

Big Al averages I think one of the best FG% in the last 5 minutes of a ball game.

This is true. Which is why i dont think shots at the end of games is really the determining factor of a "star"...though it definately is something that is an ingredient of being a star.

Over the last thirty years almost every team that won a championship had a top ten maybe even top five player in the league.
LeBron, Kobe, Wade, Duncan, Jordan, Olajuwon, Magic, Bird, etc.
When Jazz had Malone and Stockton, Bulls had Jordan and Pippen.
Jazz do not have anyone right now that could be a top five player.
Right now top five are maybe LeBron, Durant, Kobe maybe still, and who else?

Don't forget Dirk.

Agreed. The problem with Al is that he is not getting it done on the other end or the rest of the game. Often the real stars who can take over the game on O at the end can also be strong on D at the end. Al is not that.

Hayward and Favors could be all stars quite easily, but they are not going to be top 10 guys. Do you need a top 10 guy? Or can you win with 2 all stars? I think it is possible but unlikely.

To me, a superstar gets you 40 wins just by being on your roster. If you have a superstar on your team, you should almost never miss the playoffs even with scrubs around him. Think Lebron in Cleveland, Wade in the pre-Lebron/post title years, Paul Pierce before the big 3, Iverson in his prime, etc.

I honestly think the guy with the biggest likelihood of getting close to that level is Kanter. He has the raw ability, but put the emphasis on "raw". The potential is there, but it's going to take work.
