Millsap vs Mystery Player (Off-Season Signing Choice)

I've been intrigued by the slim possibility that the Bulls amnesty Boozer and the Jazz might place a winning bid there. I know the guy is the devil himself around here, but that would kind of be awesome. I'd sure like to continue to have SOMEONE on the team that actually knows how to and can run the offense that Corbin can't.

Surely you jest. I never want to see Loozer the Boozer in a jazz uniform again. Matador defense, stupid quotes and fragile body.................forget it.

Given Consensus: Millsap will garner 4 years at $9-$12Million Per, Millsap is a good starter but a great bench player. We would prefer he eventually come off the bench but are worried he won't do it, and we would prefer to pay him $8M per. We may differ a little here but here is what I would do:

Given the new CBA I don't want to pay a 6th man more than $8M, I would rather have a guy at $5M be my stud 6th man big.

Millsap Career PER is 18.72 and he could cost us as much as 5/$50-$60M

I would rather sign a player who we could get on a 3/$15M deal who has a career 18.3 career per and will fill that roll quite nicely. He and Paul have about the same time in the league and both have been starters and back ups in their careers.

Before I reveal who it is: Answer whether you think it a more wise use of cap space to go after a very similar player who can be had for a lower price tag and still produce at near the exact same level, or whether we want a 6th man at $10+M coming off our bench eventually. (My basic premise is that if Paul Millsap is your starting PF you are a mediocre team, if he is your 3rd big you can be beastly.)

What would you do with the cap space? Sign Paul to big money, or add equal talent to a smaller contract and save space?
Who do you think I am thinking of?
Or who would you sign and for what money?

As soon as I read the thread title, I just assumed it was Glen Davis. Now I'll proceed with the rest of the thread.

I like the general idea here but also agree with what Numb said.

What about someone like Jason Thompson who's long (I think) and could be had even cheaper perhaps. Let me check out his numbers.

Edit: He's not a FA.

Meh, A 14.7 PER. Lousy assist numbers. Whoever we want, I want it to be someone who knows team ball and gets around 2.5 assist a game.

What about someone like Elton Brand who's a UFA if we can get him on the cheap. Good guy and leader. He could come off the bench...only playing 21 minutes a game this year.

If Millsap didn't act like such a diva this year I would want to keep him more and slightly overpay for him.

I agree with Numb that Millsap is better than your run of the mill undersized big man. With a bad attitude I don't want him long term. Favors and Kanter are less than a season away from being just as good if not better than Sap and then Sap will whine on the bench. Is that what you want?

How much do you think he would cost? 3-4M? I'd consider being down with that but I worry about his body in the cold climate of SLC. And we'd still need a 4th big.

Also, no one's mentioned Howard or Bynum.

I'd go as high as 5 mil per for 3 seasons. I think you look at a 4th big in the draft. I like WCS but I'm worried that the Jazz will reach for a PG instead of drafting BPA.

Personally, I'd like Brand and love Kurt Thomas as our 4th big. The guy has the grit and leadership that we badly need. We could probably get those two, slightly overpaying on a couple of two year deals, for a total of 7M. That would save us over 17M from what we're paying Millsap and Jefferson and more importantly open up time for Favors and Kanter, and with a bunch of other guys coming off the books this year, and Marvin next year, we'd be set cap wise.

Love the idea but i dont think Kurt Thomas could handle another year as 4th big.

Yeah thats exactly why. I dont want to see a player die of a heart attack in a Jazz uniform. There are lots of better options for a 4th big role.

I don't think so. Thomas has all the intangibles and isn't so talented (or young) that he's gonna be pissed if he doesn't get 15-20 minutes a night. He's almost a perfect fit as a 4th big on such a young team.
