My troop was like 1/4 gay kids according to my - where are they now - Facebook research. One of them tried to get us to play strip poker with him in a tent once back in the day so I knew he was gay, but there have been a couple shockers over the years.
The campouts were always worthwhile if you had decent leaders. Especially in that Middle School age range. My parents aren't outdoorsy people in the least, so that was always a nice changeup from the city centric vacations we went on as a family. I had to be dragged to most campouts truthfully, but I was always glad afterwards, and looking back now , that my parents forced me to go on trips. Real adventure happens outdoors. I'm more convinced of that now than ever now that I've seen more of the world. Hopefully kids will continue to experience that and not consider places like Griffith Park or Central Park the good "outdoors". Lying on the grass and catching some rays in between your crappy job is not outdoors fun. A lot of people don't get that.
