Pope Benedict XVI Resigns

Most interesting aspect of it to me..... St. Malachy's prophesy.....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes

The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, is a list of 112 short phrases in Latin. They purport to describe each of the Roman Catholic popes (along with a few anti-popes), beginning with Pope Celestine II (elected in 1143) and concluding with current pope Benedict XVI's successor, a pope described in the prophecy as "Peter the Roman", whose pontificate will end in the destruction of the city of Rome.

Not that I buy into it, but from what I gather, it's kind of like the Joseph Smith/US Government prophecies where the churches don't really endorse the specific prophecies and the origins aren't completely clear, yet a whole significant portion of people within those religions do believe it and the leadership is still well aware of it and maybe even believe it individually too. The Mayan 2012 stuff was basically a big joke to everyone , but if a new Pope was named that could be connected to Petrus Romanus....and world events start to get dicey.... It would be interesting to see if that prophecy would suddenly start gaining more adherents within the Catholic Church.

I'm a pretty huge cynic and I have a very hard time believing that the leaders of any large religious organization believe in any of the crap their churches promote, other than the part where everyone should follow them and give them significant amounts of money.

Who else is rooting for the black guy to be the next pope?

A Cardinal from Ghana is supposed to be on the short list.

Ratzinger never should have been Pope to begin wtih - it was a giant FU to all the people disillusioned by the church and all the child abuse scandals.

I'd say Gordon B Hinckley believed every word. Seemed like a very sincere, humble man.

At most I'd grant him that he believes the church betters people's lives. I just don't think the guy is a prophet and he knows he's not.

I'm not sure that many Mormons outside of the Rocky Mountain region believe in the whole "saving the US Government" stuff. They seem more like... Wishful thinking and then placing them into doctrine. I doubt many Mormons in Sweden or Brazil really believed that the US was/is on the brink of disaster and some rich candy *** idiot like Romney was going to be the "Savior" the the country. When I talk to many Mormons from the east coast or California, they seem to be less entrenched in the whole "we're the only hope for the US to survive" stuff. Many might actually *gasp* consider leaders to be imperfect and own their own opinions! *gasp* In fact... Not EVERYTHING a general authority says might not be doctrine from God! *gasp*

An example? How many Mormons outside of Utah give a damn about drinking Coke? yet... Look at BYU... look here in Utah... Drinking coke is oftentimes looked down upon as if it were an illegal drug.

All because one general authority expressed his opinion and a whole paranoid group inferred that it was doctrine.

There are a lot of things that I certainly don't agree with. The whole "Us against The World" mentality definitely had great influence... And still does today...

I certainly don't believe that the Constitution will "hang by a thread" and be saved by a Mormon or Mormons. The Constitution hangs by a thread because big business and lobbyists have bought off those representing us in DC. The only way to fix that is if voters... Catholics, Evangelicals, Muslims, etc unite and remind those representing us that we're the ones in control, NOT special interest groups.

I'm close friends with some black sheep grandchildren of one of the twelve LDS apostles. Their take is their grandfather fully believes what he preaches and I believe that.

I think it's easier for people who grow up consumed in one of the various religions to believe they are called of God. Even moreso when religion is also culture, like Utah Mormonism, the Muslim world, Catholicism across time & even in the US today, all of them. World views, expectations, characteristics and things we are naturally proud/ashamed are ingrained in all of us.

I agree, though I'm a non-demonational Christian so we probably would approach how we came to that conclusion differently and of course I think most Christian churches are dealing in half truths(the truth being Jesus mixed up with the untruth of church specific dogma), not just selling a totally bunk "service" . Let's face it, they know one way or the other. The Pope is well aware if he has some kind of special connection to God or not, The Mormon prophet is well aware if he has some kind of special connection to God or not. If they are big phonies and just have the same connection to God as every other person, then nobody is more aware of it than they themselves.

Jesus Christ is not found in a confessional or in a bishop's interview. He's not found by worshipping the Virgin Mary or putting Joseph Smith or the Pope on a pedestal. Everyone has the same connection to God if they chose to use it. Anywhere. And God can be active inside of every person to whatever degree he chooses. That's what the Bible teaches and that's the way it works in practical reality in my experience. The big Palaces, the fancy temples, the fancy clothes, they don't mean anything. It's the 20% Jesus that people oftentimes find in these churches that make the stay. Or the 40% Jesus. Or whatever they find amongst all the extra crap they have to shift through. Honestly, I think that's the natural process. It's part of the reason that a lot of people don't really know their specific church doctrine/history all that well if you bombard them with questions. They just find Jesus in there somewhere and don't really care too much about the other stuff anymore.

Churches do have a place though. But instead of a prophet or a cult of personality or whatever leading them, I'd like to see them present themselves as administrators or pastors more often. Just people there to teach and help people find Jesus and bring people together that think similarly for some fellowship reasons and to be accountable to each other because they want to be, and not because it's part of a church imposed structure. Not just turn it into some body count where people join a church to follow certain people but don't ever really find Jesus. Christians are supposed to be moral people because they love God. Period. Not because they are seeking after some eternal reward that can only be found by being active in a church.

We are against CBCP's (Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines) theocratic dictatorship. We ask for
Justice for pedophile victims and CBCP crimes. Equality for woman, homosexuals and non-catholics. Secularism for all world governments.

Not really the best source to be quoting McFly, but the Catholic reign in the Philippines is something to bitch about. I have a friend who can't get his wife into the US because her ex-husband left her for multiple other wives but the Catholic dominated rules wouldn't allow her a divorce and subsequent legitimate marriage to my friend. Messed up rules in both countries...

I was going to make a smart-*** comment but I'll just reiterate that I'm pretty cynical in regard to extraordinarily powerful religious leaders and things they are in a unique position to know are not true.

Yeah it's not a great source. Interesting speculation nonetheless.

If I'm reading it correctly, they are not saying the pope was abusing children himself, correct? Because their choice of wording seems to be saying exactly that, but I don't think that's what they meant. Their assertion is that somebody in a European government is now interested in taking a deeper look at the coverup that is already well known, right?
