Self Defense

Im looking into getting some self defense items for the home and my wife. We already have an alarm system and when my kids get a bit older we will be purchasing a lab sized dog. But I would like to get something for in the home and on the go for my wife. The first thought of course is getting a gun but my wife isn't fully comfortable with having one in the home and keeping one in her purse or car. So what are some other options we could use?

The ones I have thought of are:

-taser gun

-mace

-knife

Also I was looking for some time of a rubber bullet gun that Ive heard about. Basically they hurt like hell but most likely won't kill the person.

Anyway any info you guys have would be great. Thanks.

labs love you like crazy. . . .. they will be all over you and the kids.

Goldens are about the same size, but a lot calmer. . . . couch potato type. . . . .but they'll never stop chasing a cat that runs. .. . might wag a tail at a stranger, but more likely will bark.

Great Pyhrennies are sheep dogs who wont' knock a kid over and will be more protective.

I have a Golden, if anyone came into our house that wasn't us she would lay over and expect a belly rub. Not exactly going to thwart a crime. 99% of Labs will also be like this. I wouldn't get a dog for protection, mainly because if it is trained to be aggressive towards an intruder it will need to have aggressive tendencies and I wouldnt want that around my child.

I imagine a rubber bullet gun would probably do the trick, but hell if someone is in my home and I feel threatened I'd rather shoot them with a real gun. Just to be safe.

The problem with rubber bullets is that surviving intruders can steal all you've got with a good lawyer accomplice, and have the court approve the transaction.

My wife asked me once what our two labs would do to an intruder. I said "lick them to death." In all honesty, they'd bark until someone threw a tennis ball. Then it's game over.

I don't know anyone who has a dog over 5 pounds that would even bark if an intruder came in. Stupid mutts.

Don't know if a knife would do any good. It takes an awful lot of aggression to actually have the fortitude to stab someone. Mentally and physically. Mace isn't bad but just know if you ever spray it, it affects everyone in the room yourself included. Most burglars are discouraged by alarms and dogs. Not necessarily the biting, but the barking.
