What's new

Brittney Griner is gay

Would it have been more ridiculous, and therefore funnier, is the other person in the date were aged 10? Or, is it funny to drug an adult for the purposes or rape, but not a child? Is it that raping the child is so much less outlandish and absurd than raping an adult, so it's not as funny?

I can't explain 100% why some things cross the line, and others don't. I could see myself laughing someone telling me "The only way you could get laid is with a roofie." I could NOT see myself laughing at someone telling me "The only way you could get laid is by molesting a 10 year old." Maybe kids are just off limits with these types of jokes.

Associating anything particular thing as the object of a joke diminishes the threat/horror associated with that thing; from what I can tell, it one of the main reasons we have a sense of humor. While no one joke turns opinions 180 degrees, the cumulative effect over time is significant.

I would think that it would be a very weak-minded person that would allow a long series of roofie-based jokes to have any effect on their feelings towards the acceptance of rape or another sex crime. If I joked with my friend "I'm going to kill you if you are late again!", I think everyone would understand that it's a joke and that I am not diminishing murder. Nor do I think it would have any cumulative effect on anyone hearing it over and over again.

Please ask yourself why kids are off-limits, and adults are not, whether or not you share the answer.

Really? You think there are people that don't learn from culture, respond to culture, incorporate the culture around them?

If I joked with my friend "I'm going to kill you if you are late again!", I think everyone would understand that it's a joke and that I am not diminishing murder. Nor do I think it would have any cumulative effect on anyone hearing it over and over again.

Really? Even if you hear it from just about every adult you respect growing up, not just in jokes, but in dozens of different judgments?

Do you have children? Do you try to teach them right from wrong? If so, is that because weak-minded people, so you can have an effect on them? Or is it that even srtong-minded people still learn from the examples around them and respond in like fashion?

Comedy never crosses the line. Its either funny to you or it isn't. There isn't some arbitrary "line" where a comedian goes to far. Some people may be offended some may not. Just because you don't think its funny doesn't mean ****.

You say that due to white male privilage.

Brow, did I do it right?

1- I did ask myself why kids are off limits and adults are not, and I don't have an answer.
2-Of course we learn from culture, I would never suggest otherwise. However, it is the individual's responsibility on how they respond to the culture they experience. We've all seen movies that joke about or display murder, drugs, rape, molestation, etc. Just because we witness them repeatedly doesn't mean we diminish them or are more likely to perform those acts. When you saw Lion King did you want to murder your brother afterwards? Did watching Shawshank Redemption diminish rape in your eyes?
3- I do have children, but this is not a relevant example. The original joke was not aimed at children, nor would I consider this a child-friendly site. Children are not weak-minded, but they are naive and easy to influence. They often don't understand context, sarcasm, etc. Adults are supposed to be mature enough to interpret meaning and control their emotions and actions.

Me either

I'm impressed with how many people have such good relationships with their mothers, aunts, female acquaintances, etc., that you can be absolutely sure they would tell you about one of the most painful, shamed events of their lives.

Hence the complete lack of outrage over the latest minstrel show that came to Utah. They still exist there, right?

No? You mean, they went too far and lost popularity? They really weren't funny? How about that.

Sister and wife ....... We are pretty cool with each other. I have caught them both laughing at rape jokes also. They thank you for your concern though.

1-I appreciate the effort. I'm sure you'll understand that, since I can't find a good reason either, I don't treat them differently.
2-In the Shawshank Redemption, were we asked to sympathize with the rapist or the victim? How about in the joke that started this conversation in this post? This is one aspect of "the concept of punching up" (in the movie) versus "punching down" (in the joke) that I mentioned before.
3-Adults become more fixed as they age, and bend less unless they make a determined effort, but we are always influenced buy the culture around us.

Getting closer. It's nice to know that, even though you don't agree at all, you still read it.

Of course I read it. While I ma mess with you from time to time I try not to be overly disrespectful. To have a conversation with someone and not actually listen to what they are saying is rude. I disagree but I read it.

That is not what we were adressing but you already knew that.

So you want to link a group that society at large did not find funny to a joke that so far mostly just you did not find funny?

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Hartsock again.

That is not what we were addressing but you already knew that.

I may have misunderstood what you meant back in post #76. and #79.

If you or your wife were raped, would you tell your kids about it? If not, how can you be so sure your mom told you the truth about it?

100 years ago, most people found minstrel shows funny. They lost popularity in part due to sustained campaigns about their offensiveness.
