plus companies like nokia OWN emerging markets, and as they phase out symbian and replace their lineups with with lowend wp8 phones like the lumia 520 and 620, they will garner higher percentages than apple in SE asia and rapidly developing countries elsewhere.

Nokia is well placed in the feature phone market in developing countries. You're making the assumption that those users will transition to Nokia's WP8 lineup of smartphones. There is no good reason to believe this. Android is cheaper, more flexible, and Google has been putting significant efforts in those markets to capture the transition to smartphones.

As for Apple, their phones are considered fashionable and prestigious, and developing countries are huge on that ****. I don't think I know a single family member back home who owns anything but an iPhone.

MS may prevail eventually, but time is not on their side. Their growth in the smartphone market has been glacial, and if they don't start gaining significant ground in the next few years, then they've missed the boat entirely. Just as PC growth did not last forever, neither will smartphone and tablet growth. To gain traction in a mature market that is transitioning to a new form factor is completely useless. All it does is ensure MS miss the boat on the next paradigm as well.

MS is going to take over the smart phone market the same way they took over the MP3 market with the Zune. Never heard of a Zune? Huh that's weird.

For the record. I never said MS was going to overtake the mkt.. what I said is things will change fairly shortly that will create a shift in which is growing at a faster rate... like 300x faster, even. All I'm claiming is a major shift is all.

What's interesting about that is most people who owned a Zune say its the best mp3 they have ever used. Just like the dreamcast, it got to the market way too late.
a blast of "hydration" to your face. posted on my Nokia Lumia 920

Are you counting on their partnership with Intel? It is true that Intel will release their power efficient Haswell architecture soon enough, and I'd love for your optimism to pan out (I'm a fan of x86). But Haswell is still nowhere as efficient as current state of the art ARM, and Windows is still less efficient than competing operating systems. Keep in mind that ARM will release specs for their next-gen chips at the end of the year, further expanding the gap.

I simply have a hard time believing that you have some secret information that I'm not privy to. Being my profession and all.

I've got the S3 which is not much different to the S4 from what I've heard.

It's a great phone - it does what it's supposed to. My only problem with it is that it's a bit slow compared to the iPhone 5. For example, when you press the "Home" button to return to desktop, there is a noticeable "lag". Whereas with the iPhone 5, everything is super snappy, the iPhone's home button is much more responsive. But that's really nit picking IMO - Android is just so flexible and more advanced than iOS in my opinion anyway.

It is important to note though that the new version of iOS is coming out soon with Johny Ive now overseeing the designing himself (Scott Forstell being fired last year). So it is possible that iOS may come up with a lot of new features, but that's in the "wait and see" basket.

Have you given considerations to the Samsung Note II (or the Note III which will be coming out in September I hear). Why? The screen is a bit bigger than S3 and S4, but you get the built in stylus - which at first could sound like a bit of a gimmick. But if you're like me and you hate typing on the on-screen keyboard, instead of typing out a long email - you can just simply write it with the stylus, and the handwriting recognition software automatically translate them into texts.

I'm really missing that feature on my S3... I can't type more than 4 sentences on my S3, but if there is a built-in stylus, I think I could just keep on writing. It would also be helpful when you're just quickly jotting down notes without having to look down "All The Time".

Hope this gives you some food for thought...

Yeah, I worked with a guy who bought one and he loved the hell out of it.

you're warm. I have a VERY good friend that is the lead corporate lawyer handling 'some' negotiations...

not a done deal.. but damn close. These are conversations we have at my house over wine and .. well, wine.

Siro, is there an overwhelming difference between the S3 and S4? The S4 is a lot more money, so I want to be sure it's actually worth it.

Not an overwhelming difference. But keep in mind that it's also about software, not just hardware. The S3 is relatively old in the smartphones world. It has a custom Android skin that Samsung won't feel that inclined to update as often. For example, once some S3s updated their OS to Jelly Bean, people started experiencing sever keyboard lag and other random problems (let me know if you have this issue, I'll guide you through it). It's been a couple of months now, but the issue is yet to be fixed (Samsung will blame the carrier, and the carrier will blame Samsung).

The S4 also have some cool native apps that aren't available on the S3. I'm sure you've seen that commercial where the older lady removes a photo bomber from a graduation shot. But there are many other good features, like 360 degree panorama, impressive post production capabilities, and plenty else.

But, and this may be important for someone with more limited income, the S3 can be had for cheap. Probably even for free with a contract (possibly, I'd have to check). And it's a solid phone with everything you actually need. The S4 might have the ability to serve as a remote control for your television, but you don't really NEED that. So just look at a couple of reviews, and see if the S3 is sufficient for your purposes.

OK so the S3 vs S4 comparison here is a pretty comprehensive breakdown of the differences:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLwo4gPxUek

Essentially I see the differences being:

- slightly bigger screen from 4.8" to 5"

- slightly better resolution

- slightly better game performance

- slightly thinner/narrower design

- slightly better battery life

- introduction of sensor

- slightly better software

- more or less the same camera

To me it comes down to what type of user are you.

Are you likely going to be doing a lot of gaming? I currently play a lot of Real Racing 3, and yes to be honest there are times when it lags, but it's probably only about 5% of the total playing time. But I only play casually. If you'll be doing more on it then may be go with S4.

If you're just an everyday user who uses it for Facebook, Line, messaging, phone calls, non-graphic intensive apps, then I'd definitely just stick with the S3 - which is quite a bit cheaper. (I'm currently in this camp ATM). Moreover, because there isn't much byway of the camera quality, S3 is more than sufficient for what I use it for. I don't care about Samsung's gimmicky software like S-Voice, S-Beams, etc, at all.. it looks cool on paper, but in real life everyday use, I just never have time for them.

If you're looking for an above average smart phone, which is plenty quick for your everyday use, can take decent quality photos and something you can plug straight into your HD tv (iPhone can't do this) - then for the price, I think the S3 is a great option.

To me I don't see a whole lot of difference between the S3 and the S4. But if you're like me, and just want that additional use out of your phone (can double as a note pad) - then I'd go with Note II with the 5.5" screen with the build in stylus. I just think that it gives you a totally new use of the phone.

watch me be right...

That Microsoft increases market share? Not a very ambitious feat, to be honest. Not trying to bust your balls here but Microsoft is dead meat in the smart phone game. Smart phones are the answer to everyone's hatred of windows. Sure Win 7 was a nice olive branch, but we haven't forgotten that Microsoft represents all that is evil (kidding, of course). The fact that apple, the red headed step child of the personal computing world, is the king of the hill should be a pretty good indicator of where consumer sentiment lies. Not with Microsoft.

butttt i read a looottt of gadget blogs, and since you're steering away from the iphone, i would recommend comparing the s4, htc one (my vote), droid razr maxx hd, or..... don't laugh..... the z10.

scratch the z10... sprint doesn't have that either lol.

wait... don't have the droid razr either..

weren't you posting from your Nokia Lumia 2 days ago? Isn't it your fav. phone?
