ESPN Future Power Ranking - Jazz Dropped to #10

We've dropped from #4 last year to #10 this year... and it seems having Corbin as our coach had once again costed us...

The Jazz peaked in the last edition of FPR, rising all the way to fourth, largely on the strength of a very favorable salary cap situation. While that situation remains positive, it looks a little less favorable to our larger panel this time than it did nine months ago -- several teams have moved ahead of Utah in cap space.

Utah drops two spots in Players given the uncertain futures of Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson and Mo Williams, who can all leave this summer. Derrick Favors, Gordon Hayward and Enes Kanter provide hope, as do two more first-round picks (Nos. 14 and 21) in the upcoming draft.

The front office remains a strong suit, with long-time basketball operations chief Kevin O'Connor still in house and giving over the GM reins to the well-regarded Dennis Lindsey, formerly of the Spurs. The panel has less faith in coach Tyrone Corbin, however.

With a core of interesting young players, multiple draft picks and cap space, the Jazz remain a top-10 team in our rankings and look well positioned to succeed for the rest of the decade.

Teams ahead of us are:

1. Heat
2. OKC
3. Rockets
4. Spurs
5. Tankers
6. Pacers
7. Bulls
8. Cavs
9. Nuggets
10. Jazz

So we trust the "national media" if they agree with us about Corbin, but ignore them when they seem to imply that the loss of Mo, Al, Millsap would hurt the team long term?

re-read the article you posted

I don't think it's implying that we'll get worse at all. It could mean bringing back Al & Sap is detrimental to our youth developing - bringing us down the ranking. It could also mean that if they do leave, it is uncertain as to what we can get back for them in terms of assets.

Of course it is. We were number 4 with them and 10 without. You can try to lay it all on Corbin, but the power ranking values talent. Why do you think Miami is ranked number 1? Because of all their young talent, cap space, and draft picks?

Well there are a number of factors contributing to that when they calculate this. In summary the following compares last year's placing to this year's:

Players (2012: 11th) (2013: 13rd)
Management (2012: 8th) (2013: 12th)
Money (2012: 3rd) (2013: 7th)
Market (2012: 23rd) (2013: 25th)
Draft (2012: 10th) (2013: 8th)

Change in Players ranking only dropped 2 places from 11th to 13rd. Drop in Money also a factor from 3rd to 7th.

The biggest change seems to be "Management" dropping 4 spots from 8th overall, to 12th overall this year. This is surprising given that we obtained Dennis Lindsey which we were praised for in the write up of the piece.

If anything, we should have stayed the same or moved up. The fact that we moved down 4 spots (completely in the opposite direct) seems to be down solely to "Corbin".

Why would I think the national media is racist? And y'all are crazy if you don't think a very large portion of white Utahans are racist. Every walked into a Denny's at 7:00 a.m. coffee time? 3/4 of the people in my office talk like racists, and don't even bother disguising it much.

Hahaha... Let me point out to Franklin that the national media loves Doc Rivers and Lionel Hollins.

Good job derailing your own thread, bonesmoker.

Can we get this back on topic?

What exactly goes into "future power" rankings? If it's OKC and Miami next season then I think #10 is very generous. I'd love to think this team is a 4-5 seed team with all the upside in the world.
