North Carolina Academic Scandal

I know most here are not college fans.. but curious if anyone has any thoughts on the academic fraud at UNC and the NCAA's lack of interest in it.

The cliff notes;

The NCAA 'suspected' D Rose cheated on his SAT (but ZERO proof) and decided to vacate wins at Memphis (even though the alleged cheating took place PRIOR to Rose even having signed with Memphis and the NCAA, itself, cleared him to play. NCAA decides that since Rose couldn't prove he didn't cheat, that they punished the University for playing him. (This was just used as an example to compare to the UNC stuff outlined below.)

Fast forward.

Under oath, high-ranking administrators of UNC have admitted to the creation of FAKE classes for athletes. Also, in court-ordered emails, there is now proof of 250+ REQUESTED grade changes for athletes.
NCAA says it's not within their jurisdiction.

Huh?

Haven't fake classes for college basketball and football players been going on for decades?

I was surprised I could still find this gem..... https://espn.go.com/sportsnation/quiz/_/id/600

The short answer is The NCAA hates Calipari and likes Roy Williams.

I think there is a clear difference between easy classes and fake classes. UNC's classes didn't even exist.

Georgia was forced to vacate half their wins from that season for academic fraud because players got grades that didn't show up for class. NCAA also put Harrick on a 7 year show-cause.

But the NCAA says they have no jurisdiction on the EXACT same issue (only MUCH worse) with proof going back 20 years. It's the 'no jurisdiction' part that's so blatant.

Oh, and

As a college grad, this angers me. What are these institutions? Sorry *** businesses or educational institutions? Want to be a business? Then stop taking my tax dollars away claiming that it is needed for educational purposes.

I am actually somewhat sympathetic to the college student athlete when it comes to being compensated. I do feel it's lame that these schools make millions while the student athlete receives a check for a few hundred for room and board. They can also be cut at any time. But I also am very critical when it comes to these student athletes being treated with kid gloves for their academics. They receive far more lenience than anyone else on campus. They can miss tons of class, make up the exams whenever, etc.

I personally believe that The entire American model for education needs to be modernized. I love college sports but don't see them contributing much to the future of our country. While so many resources are invested into weight rooms, coaching salaries, etc other places in Europe, Asia, and S America are focusing on... Well, you know, education and preparing students to compete in a global market.

Agree with the first two sentences completely and part ways in the third.
The universities need to maximize profits (sports, etc) but create better education from it... rather than any other focus.

First off, the NCAA is a piece of crap. Just look at how they're dealing with Miami...it's ridiculous.

Now then, the president of the ACC, John Swofford, UNC grad.

UNC is a poster boy for the NCAA, much like Alabama. Those guys aren't going to get in trouble. If this was anybody else (Kentucky, Miami, USC, mainly private schools) they would get in a **** ton of trouble with the NCAA. Hell, the NCAA didn't have the legal right to suspend Penn State, that was out of their jurisdiction too...they're just trying to avoid this and it's ********.

I'm not saying this as a Duke fan either. As a student, it's infuriating. They're blatantly cheating, and nobody seems to care about it. Pisses me off.

Now every major network, newspaper, and commentator has slammed U*NC for this stuff.. truly remarkable the NCAA refuses to take a look into it when professors, administration, and players have all come forward.

New billboards in Raleigh...

So tarnishedheels.info is just a plug to sell a book.

Does the NCAA even have any power anymore? They're just trying to hang on and appear to be relevant so the top people can keep their jobs and paychecks.

Gerald Gurney, president of the Drake Group, whose mission is "to defend academic integrity in higher education from the corrosive aspects of commercialized college sports," said the findings should provide fodder for the NCAA to levy one of its most severe charges against UNC: lack of institutional control.

"I can safely say that the scope of the 20-year UNC fraud scandal easily takes the prize for the largest and most nefarious scandal in the history of NCAA enforcement. The depth and breadth of the scheme -- involving counselors, coaches, academic administrators, faculty, athletic administrators, etc. -- eclipses any previous case," Gurney said.

This thread is over a year old now.. welcome aboard, CNN.

and your thoughts? (again, I am not asking anything about Carolina.. but rather the selective enforcement)

I never did reply. If you are a power player in college sports, you get next to nothing until there's a media firestorm. Non-power conferences, FCS, Division II, you so much as breathe on the rules wrong, and you're punished. Takes 20 years of academic fraud and 20 years of covering up a pedophile to have anything done to any school that can affect $. I'm not particularly a fan the power six conferences.
